Apparently the trooper was responding to a roll over accident when the suspect shot the trooper and then assaulted him. The Good Samaritan asked the trooper if he needed help, which he replied yes, the citizen got his gun and told the suspect to stop banging the troopers head against the ground and when he wouldn't, shot him and killed him. Good for him.

From that article:

Also on January 12, the New York Times editorial board wrote against expanding the opportunities for armed citizens to be armed for self-defense. The paper claimed, “The grim truth is that concealed-carry permit holders are rarely involved in stopping crime.”

This was in my neck of the woods and is a weird case. It started when a driver called 911 saying that someone in a car in the median shot at him and when the officer was responding he found what appeared to be a roll over accident. He may have thought it was a different scene and let his guard down. It appears that a female passenger was ejected from the vehicle in the rollover and was killed and that it was the driver who started shooting at people. Why would the victim of an car accident start shooting at people? Did he cause the accident deliberately or have some kind of breakdown afterward?

We may never know but this good thing is the officer is alive.

Maybe it was a domestic and the suspect's wife/gf was the ejected female and once it went bad the suspect wanted suicide by cop......

One of the reasons that I got the CCP was the thought that one day I might see a LEO in trouble and be able to help.

Good. The Citizen gave 'em some hot lead and the shooter died from dynamic lead poisoning.

I say that was the appropriate response.

Suicide by cop? See that mentioned a lot. Would a person committing suicide by cop first shoot the trooper and then be bashing his head into the ground until stopped by the motorist? I strongly suspect the trooper would not have survived if not for the intervention of that motorist. I believe it likely, that without the motorist's action, the suspect would have survived and driven away in an Arizona DPS unit. I somehow doubt the suspect would have been remorseful over his failure to complete suicide by cop as he left the scene......

Who knows what was in his mind.

Maybe he thought other cops would shoot him once he assaulted the first one.

Secondly, why did he stop shooting? Did his gun jam? If it didn't why didn't he keep shooting?

We had a fellow from Louisiana last year try to hold up our Local Gun Store. He came in with a 30-06 rifle demanding a handgun and ammunition. He fired 2 rounds narrowly missing an employee.
He ran out side where 2 deputies armed with AR 15 rifles were waiting. The Mexican cafe across the street lost most of their windows. The felon was hit so many times the County Corner stopped counting at 26 holes. Yep, those high capacity magazines are deadly.

One of the things that every officer is taught about potential suicides - is just how dangerous they are to others... Remember suicide is pretty much aggression turned inwards. A small percentage of those bent on self-destruction are also intent on taking others with them (and I believe that some of our modern mass shootings are just that -an aggressive suicide in motion...).

Fortunately for every officer and citizen you don't have to inquire about motive - all you need to respond to is a potential adversary's actions... Glad the trooper survived and that's the main point.

I guess I could say the same thing about him. Journalists are rarely involved in a credible news report. Just because its rare for a good Samaritan to step in doesn't mean it won't happen. Most folks are told its the job of the police to deal with bad guys. We citizens are rarely asked for assistance. I try to stay out of their way unless I see something really wrong. Then I ask if they need assistance.

From the link in the OP...

When will these people ever stop? It boggles my mind that after all that has happened recently that this level of ignorance and incompetency isn't at the very least caught before it goes to print.

This gives a few more details ...

Apparently a couple motorists stopped. One that shot the guy attacking the trooper and another one that called it in to get additional resources at the scene.

Yes... call to get additional resources. That .... takes .... TIME. But the guy on the scene, with the gun, didn't.

Which would you want to depend on?

Lol...well YEAH. Kind of an obvious point isn't it?

Just saying, it's a good thing that the second guy called it in to get other police and EMS out there since the trooper had been shot twice and had his head bounced off the road a number of times by the suspect while his right arm wasn't working. No telling if the trooper had much time at all to notify dispatch that the whole thing was going sideways or not. They could have been clueless.

First step is to obviously get the guy off the trooper.
Second is to get additional resources out there to secure the scene and get him some medical attention.
Both are important and one comes right after the other.

When only the cops have guns you have a police state. When the citizens are armed you have a Democratic nation. But what do we have when the Liberals own our news media? :uhoh:

The truth?

Beliefs in keeping with the origins of this republic?

I dunno, just the first two that popped into my mind.

Great outcome. Chalk one up for the good guys.

What does this have to do with this thread?

Do you have a link to this?

That was not a suicide by cop. I have seen a number of those and they usually involve behaving in a way that draws police attention and then brandishing a weapon, often a fake one, to cause themselves to be shot. This guy had apparently rolled his car and killed the female passenger, so it may well have been a domestic situation to begin with. No idea why he attacked the trooper.

The NY Times is not a news organization; it is a propaganda arm of the political left. I say that as a former reporter who always played up citizens defending themselves and others in stories, and who was present several times when police officers fired their weapons and quite a few more times when they were involved in physical altercations. Cops I knew who had been assisted on the street by good citizens were always exceptionally grateful and often presented them with certificates of appreciation.

One of the stories I most liked covering were those where business or home owners used a gun to stop a robbery, burglary or other crime. And each time that happened those crimes diminished noticeably for some weeks after. A determined armed citizen not only protects him or her self; they also send a message in general to thugs to walk carefully or face the consequences.

Apologies to the OP for the slight detour caused here:

I have seen this on Fox News a number of times. But you are not likely see it any where else. Now if the Felon had a CCW it would be all over the Liberal Media.:(

Speaking of "fake news"...You throw out this little news story in this thread, which by my reading has zero correlations to the topic at hand, so now I'd like to learn more about it.

Please provide a link that supports this incident.
