Somewhat patiently awaiting a new (to me) press set up in the next couple days and I am going to be pounding out 45/70 (marlin 1895 xlr), 280 (Ruger M-77), 30-06 (Mauser vz24 sporter), 44 Mag (Marlin 1894ss) and 22 hornet( single shot). I know, I know use the manual. They are coming (speer and sierra manuals) with the press and I am trying to get a jump on things to research when they arrive.

I am looking for accurate and consistant loads not so much super max loads for now but I do want to power up the 44 mag for all around use. The 280, 44mag and 45/70 will see deer hunting season this year.

Thanks for the consideration and be safe.

Patty

Pet Loads

Can only help with 30-06 and 44 mag. 30-06, CCI 200 primer, 52.0 grs IMR-4064, Speer 150 gr Grand Slam, 30-06, CCI 250 mag primer, 56.0 grs H414, Hornady 165 gr spire point or Remington 165 gr Core-lokt. For 44 mag, CCI 350 mag primer, 24.0 grs 296, Hornady 240 gr XTP, 44 mag, CCI 300 primer, 15.0 grs Blue Dot, Hornady 240 gr XTP. I had a Marlin 1894 44 mag rifle and it would not shoot cast bullet loads very accurately, maybe the microgroove rifling? Above loads are max or close to max, all disclaimers apply.

You said it yourself...Be patiant and read the manuals. Then you can start looking for YOUR OWN pet load. That's where the fun comes in...You might invest $20.00 more for a Lyman's 48th edition to add to the other two manuals...

Thanks for the recommendations...

Got the press setup and mounted. An Ebay deal that actually worked...
RCBS Rock Chucker Supreme kit with Press, powder measure, scale deburr and neck brushes, 2 manuals, RCBS trimmer, lots of lube & pad, funnel, wrench kit, 2 loading blocks... for 2 bills.

I ordered 300 7mm bullets for the 280 (139, 154 & 175 gr), 500 44 mag bullets (265 gr), 1200 45/70 bullets (300 hp and 350 fn 500 ea.), 100 280 brass, dies for 44 mag and 280, hand prime tool but forgot to get another trickler, dang... Already have a bunch of 45/70 & 457mag brass, bullets and die set & 44 mag brass.

As I mentioned in another post I am a 1st brass rat and have hundreds of #'s of misc rifle sorted by cal and headstamp so my brass needs for 30-06 and 22hornet are taken care of.

I was hoping to get more input on general powder types to narrow the search down in getting some loads worked up without having to buy a lot of different brands and types of powder. So far I am figuring on IMR or H4350 for the 280 & '06, H4198 for the 45/70 to start and I don't have a clue for the 44 mag or 22 hornet... Looking for accuracy and consistancy and later I will work on the heavier loads.

Please feel free to continue your suggestions, they are appreciated.

Thanks & be safe
Patty

For your .280

I have a Model 700 Mountain Rifle (24" barrel) in .280. It really liked some older Remington factory rounds with their 150 grain Core-lokt bullet. I was getting less than one inch groups at 100 yards with them.

Which led me to try some Hornady 154 grain SPs to duplicate the factory accuracy. I ended up using 52.0 grains of IMR 4350, Norma brass, and Winchester primers. I trimmed the brass to 2.53 and OAL is set a 3.32. And the groups came in under one inch, which is what I wanted. It's not a max load and very pleasant.

Patty, for the 44 AND the hornet get Hodgdon's Lil-gun powder. It's especially made for the hornet, but a lot of people have been using it in the 44 mag with great results. That's another project I have to get going on, as I have both calibers to experiment with.

Thanks for the info...

I just finished some sighting and hunting loads for the 45/70 and will try them later today. It is great to be able to roll my own ammo once again...

Actually, Hodgdon's Lil'Gun, was developed for the .410 Shotgun, but as it turns out, is the all time best powder for the .22Hornet.

My "pet" load for the .22Hornet is the 40gr Sierra Varminter HP, seated to 1.780" over 12.5gr of Hodgdon's Lil'Gun; a Winchester SmallPistol primer and NeckTurned brass cases. Gives 3,000fps and submoa accuracy. However, for 50gr Hornady "blitz", try Accurate #1680 at 10.8gr for 2,470fps but "one-hole" accruacy. For the 35gr and 33gr V-max, try H110 at 11.2gr for 3,100fps.

Don't have a .280 but would suggest the Nosler 140gr Ballistic Tip bullet and IMR4350. 46.5gr of IMR4350 and the 140gr Ballistic Tip gives 2,800fps and sub-moa accuracy in my Rem M7 in 7mm-08. The Sierra 140gr Game King and Pro-Hunter are very good too. Almost as good of accuracy with superior game performance is the 140gr Remington CorLokt. In my experience, the CorLokt will out-perform the 140gr Nosler Partition. Go figure !, cheapest bullet is a better game bullet than nearly the most expensive.............

For the .30/06, Best accuracy is with either a Sierra 150gr or Nosler 150gr Ballistic Tip over 52.0gr of IMR4064. Better velocity can be had with 53.0gr of RL-15 but not as good of accuracy. (3,000fps). Accuracy is astonding with a 165gr or 168gr with 56.5gr of IMR4350. (H4350 is "faster" but not as accurate). With the 180gr bullet, either a Sierra, Speer, Flat-Base over 60.0gr of RL-22 for at or just under 2,800fps. A real accurate "power-house" load.

For the .45/70, I use a RCBS 300gr FNGC (mine casts to 318gr w/gas-check) over either 48.0gr of H4198 or 53.0gr of IMR3031 for 1,900fps from Marlin 1895 GuideGun, or 2,000fps from 22" bbl. Mine shoots to near MOA and kills deer like lightning.

I've not fooled around with the .44mag in over 20yrs. I've loaded a few rounds for aquaintances.

With the 240gr and lighter jacketed bullets, I've had best luck with H110 and #2400. With cast bullets, #2400 and Unique. I've shot a LOT of 10.0gr of Unique under a 255gr Keith-style SWC for around 1,100fps. And of course 22.0gr of #2400 for ~1,400fps. BE CAREFUL WITH THIS DATA AS IT'S OVER 20YRS OLD.

IMR 4350 will work good for both the .280 loads previously posted and 165gr -06 loads. I use 56gr of IMR 4350 under 165gr Sierra Gameking and WLR primers for an excellent deer hunting load. Sub 1" grouping @ 100yds out of my Savage 110 bolt.

I use AA#9 under 240gr Meister hard cast out of my .44 mag SRH. Also, Unique works good under the same bullets too for milder loads.

I've had good results with any 150-grain bullet in my '06. Mostly, 52.5 grains of 4064 and either Rem 9-1/2 primers or Winchester large rifle. Less 464 with the Sierra 180-grain SPBT, of course, but I don't remember the load. Book max, likely; 0.8 MOA at 500 yards. After fifty-some years of laziness, I meddled some with 54.0 grains of H414 behind the 180; 3/8 MOA for a three-shot group--after which I grinned and quit.

I've found H110 to work well with heavy loads in the .44 Maggie; whatever the book says is max, for a Redhawk. I use 231 for IPSC loads in .45ACP; I've just left the powder measure set on 5.8 grains for 250-grain lead plinkers in the Redhawk. Heavier bullet, longer barrel, notably more Thump on steel...
