Freedom States Alliance Will Make the Case that John Ashcroft is Using Project Safe Neighborhoods as a Fig Leaf to Cover his Actions on Behalf of the NRA

War on Terrorism Suffers as a Result

WHEN: Friday, January 31st, 2003
10:30 AM Eastern

WHERE: Center City, Philadelphia, PA
Radisson Plaza - Warwick Hotel, Cherry Room 3rd Floor
1701 Locust Street

WHO: Bryan Miller, Spokesperson for Freedom States Alliance & Executive Director, CeaseFire PA
Andy Pelosi, Spokesperson for Mid-Atlantic Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence & Exec. Director, New Yorkers Against Gun Violence
Carole Stiller, President, New Jersey State Council of Million Mom March
Diane Edbril, Associate and Legislative Director, CeaseFire PA
Rev. Jack Johnson, Chair of Ceasefire New Jersey

WHAT: The Freedom States Alliance (FSA) -- a coalition of gun violence prevention organizations -- will provide evidence that Attorney General John Ashcroft is choosing the agenda of the NRA over fighting terrorism and protecting public safety. Ashcroft attended a conference with U.S. Attorneys on Project Safe Neighborhoods in Philadelphia on Thursday, Jan. 30. The FSA will make the case that Ashcroft's ties to the gun lobby have resulted in policies that make communities 'less safe.'

Just two examples include:
*Ashcroft refused to allow the FBI access to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) to determine whether suspected terrorists had purchased guns after 9/11, despite his authority to do so - a move praised by the NRA.

*Ashcroft now oversees the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearm due to the reorganization from the Homeland Security Act. As head of the agency that oversees gun dealers, Ashcroft has yet to take any action or submit legislation to restrict civilian access to military style weapons such as .50 caliber sniper rifles that are powerful enough to shoot down aircraft.

Maybe we should organize counter protests of smiling happy gun owners. Leftist gun grabbers are always so angry and grumpy. Would it not be great to get these angry gun grabbers in front of the camera for all to see!
