Hi All,

Will be in Phoenix at the beginning of August, and plan to get a CCW before I get my licence.

Anyhow, I have done some research on what instructors to get the 16 hour CCW training from. Thus far, I am leaning towards
ADFT. Seems to have the best reputation.

Are there any others that I should consider? Does anyone have any reviews of AFDT training, etc?

Check with the community colleges, Scottsdale or Mesa maybe.

One or two of the colleges have an instructor named ARNOLD (ARNIE) STALMAN.

Without a doubt, Arnie is the best firearms instructor in the state.

He teaches at the Law Enforcement Acadamy here in the valley.

Ask any Phoenix officer about Arnie and you will probably get the same answer.

I got my CCW this past January from a group called CONCEALED CARRY WEAPONS TRN /CODDINGTON ENTERPRISES INC.

The phone number is 480-839-9055

The class is tought by 3 retired DPS officers. Really nice guys with a lot of experience. The shootin portion of the class is also done at a private location. I would highly recommend these guys for the class.

Plus it is only $50.00 and that includes the fingerprinting.

This past November I took my AZ CWP class at the Urban Firearms Institute, located in the Caswell Shooting Range, Mesa. I thought it was extremely well conducted, the instructors were very knowledgeable, and it was overall highly informative as it covered all of the important topics regarding carry laws and use of force.

The best part of the class was an interactive simulator called the "Range 2000 Use of Force". A video of a staged scenario is projected onto a wall and you react to the events. The simulator then reacts to you - speaking or shooting the simulator's pistol will alter the events in the video. Now, it's not super smooth - there are obvious cuts when scenes change to react to your input, but all in all very educational. The simulator gives some excellent insight on how ambiguous, and stressful, a real self-defense situation can be. The instructor can also manipulate the events during a scenario to add interesting plot twists.

Check out their web site for more info: Urban Firearms Institute/ Caswell Shooting Range

I got my Az CCW from Caswells as well. I second the vote for them. The self defense simulator is great.

The instructors are great and the training is great.

I'll third the vote for Caswells/Urban Firearms Institute. I, too, took my CCW course there shortly after I relocated to AZ last year. The training was of high quality, and the instructor kept things interesting, even for an experienced shooter. If I had a complaint, it would be that we did very little actual shooting -- just the qualification. This was balanced by the time spent in the excellent simulator.

I would counsel you to ignore most of the "stopping power" discussion, though, since the instructors at Urban Firearms seem to swallow the discredited Marshall/Sanow theory on "one shot stops."

Ditto on Caswell's. The shoot/ don't shoot simulator is great! and the instructors are top notch.

Just wanted to pass along that I ended up doing the CCW class at Caswells.

It was a great class, although I have a bruise from how close the instructor made me keep the gun to my chest in close retention shooting.

Arizona CCW classes

Hello,

I have not been on line here for a very long time.

I reread some posts and found that this subject has had rules changes.

Effective Sept 21 (give or take a couple days),2006 a CCW holder in AZ, ARE NOT required to take a refresher class to renew their CCW permit.

If someone already posted this, well you have heard it twice now
