Picked up a 681 today. $450 out the door in excellent shape. Lockup is rock solid on all chambers. I got my taxes back, hit the pawn shops, and this was the best deal I could find. I'll let you know how she shoots.:)

You just bought one of my grail guns. In my estimation, that's probably the finest fighting revolver ever produced.

Nice pu skidder. What did you order for replacement grips? You've been kind of scarce lately, everything cool?

I ordered some Hogue square butt conversion grips. These Pachs are just too small for this gun. I think they would be ok on a snub, but this gun is a little to front heavy for these little grips.

Things are going pretty good. My oldest boy had a couple operations but he's doing better now. Thanks for asking.

I didn't realize this was an L frame when I first picked it up, but after comparing cylinders to the GP it looks to be about the same or slightly larger.

Have to say tax refund money well spent! I think the Model 10, the Model 681, and the Ruger Service Six are three of the best service revolvers ever made.

Unless my eyes are deceiving me, that's a round-butt 4" gun. Interesting! Did it come from the factory as a round-butt, or does it appear to have been converted?

I picked up an excellent condition 686 no-dash about two weeks ago, and while I prefer round-butt frames, I'm afraid to go chopping up a nice old gun. If it needed major TLC that would be a different matter entirely...

Good Call boricua9mm!!
I didn't catch the conversion until you mentioned it. I took the grip off and noticed there was a slight difference in the finish both on the palm and trigger side of the grip frame.

That's why I like to post in here, you guys always come through.:)

Here are some pics. Whoever it was did a good job.

Nice! If they didnt leave any deep grind marks, you can blend the finish with 800 grit and finer sandpaper from an auto parts store.

Of course, if your desired grips cover tye backstrap, then it doesnt even matter.

Great find!

Great find! I believe that 681 will be able to hold its own when shooting with its two new adjustable sight stainless steel .357 cell mates.

Excellent pictures too - thanks for sharing.

Thanks!

I was looking for a 686 to add to my collection, but they wanted $675 for the 686 at the store down the street. I went with what I thought was the better deal.

I don't know much about S&W revolvers, but it says 681-2 on the frame when you open the cylinder.

I jumped into my revolver parts box and found these Pachmayr grippers for a Security Six. To my surprise they fit like a glove. I don't think they would fit on a square butt k-frame, but on this gun they fit better than they did on my Security Six.

I have seen one in top shape for $600 which seems to be the going rate now. I also passed on what I assumed to be very uncommon factory nickel 581 which I found somewhat interesting, but not enough to threaten my beloved G20s. One must remember one G20 is better then having two .357 revolvers.

Nice 681 you got there, I have it's brother a 686.

Very Nice! That is the one I was looking for. Unfortunately, the place down the street wanted $225 more for the 686. I prefer adjustable sight, but not for $225 more. My SP has fixed sights and it is a tack driver, I hope this one reflects the same accuracy.
