Picked up a S&W Mod 10-6

Last Thursday after lunch I was haveing gun withdraws. I had only bought 12 guns so far this year and was feeling the urge to get another. I stopped off at a pawn shop on the way back to the lab to have a look around.
Sitting in the display case was a pretty good looking S&W Mod 10 with a four inch heavy barrel priced at $249.99. It had a set of Goodyears on it.
Once I had it in my hand I could see that it had been reblued, but $249.99 was still a great price.
Now if you know me, buying guns is like a game to me. I look for something below market value and then try to get it for less.
I start to talk with the guy and he says to make him an offer. So i thll him I'll give him $200 out the door for it. He said he would check. He then pulled it up on the computer and got a sad look on his face. He said that whoever made the lown on the gun had put to much in it. He let me look at the screen and I could see that he had $240 in the gun.
I told him that was a little more then I wanted to pay and handed the gun bask to him. He then said that he would be willing to take a $10 loss to move the gun and would let me have it for $230. Well I bought the gun. :mrgreen:
When I got Lab I let my friend that is a S&W Armor have a look at it. He said it was in pretty good shape and that I should be ashame for paying so little for the gun.
He said that it needed a good cleaning and a minor adjustment to tighten up the cylinder and If I bring it to him next week he would take care of in.



I don't much care for rubber grips so when I got home I pulled out an old set of Smith wood grips from my grip box. Now all I need to do is find a grip screw.

I saw a LNIB 10 , with the cleaning kit this week for $500.00 . If I had not just bought 2 14's last month , I might have made an offer on it .

Nice find. I don't have a Model 10 anymore, but have owned several over the years. Good guns all around.

Don't give up on those "Goodyears" too fast. The wood looks a lot better, but those rubber ones are great shooters.

I said I don't have a Model 10 anymore, but I did pickup a really nice Colt MK III, Official Police today. I haven't even taken a picture of it yet. And yes, it does have the wooden grips, so I know how you feel.

A LEO trade-in 10-6 was my first S&W revolver some twenty years ago. Still have it and it has about the best DA trigger of any revolver I own. Enjoy.

I have the gun all apart, sitting on my desk. It needs a few adjustments and will make a great shooter.

Mine is a former British loner gun for the Bobbies.
The sideplate has a new markings on it identifying it with their departments listing numbers.
Part of the low price is the cost of a sideplate which I don't care about.[ There's holster wear but the revolver is 100% tight whaer it should be! In fact the D/A trigger pull is very difficult!
The revolver shoots great in every way, no looseness or play anywhere!
In my opnion, the 4" HB is the best combination! A bit heavy but that steadys it!

The .38 Special is a very good fightstopper and quite accurate also! A perfect plinker and as a self-defense round, it's proven it's worth for decaces and decades! Modern ammo far exceeds past ammo preformance and rounds like the Horniday .38 Special only XTP turn preformance levels almost up to hot 9mm spec's.
Thus making the .38 Special quite formidable! Low recoil and high power! Ideal for short bbls!
I had looked long and hard for a tight HB Model 10 for a long time! I prefer the HB to the slimmer versions, though it is heavier to carry.

Looks like my 10-6 on my night stand (sans the re-blue). I've got both the original walnut, and the rubber Pachmayr grips, too.

That is a pristine looking M10 and it's very difficult to do better than having one with the heavy barrel. I'm a rabid fan of the .38spl in general and the model 10 in particular. I once had the skinny barrel model but let myself get talked into a trade. Not long after I got a heavy barrel M10; that was back when a brand new one was $60. I have it to this day. It has been modified, by me, for double action only and the action slicked up, again by me, to a buttery smoothness. That gun is special to me in a number of ways and is my pet. Here it is. I made the grips and the cutout facilitates speed loaders.

I have a S&W 2003 catalog that shows a brand new Model 10 that's gorgeous! It made me wonder why it wasn't a Model 13. The gun is plenty strong and it's a waste not to make a magnum version. For years I considered the 13 to be the ultimate home defense gun, where weight, balance, power and price all came together in a wonderful perfect storm of near perfection!

Years ago I read the tragic story about a newlywed couple on their honeymoon. They were hiking out in the deep the woods when they noticed that a black bear was trailing them. They tried to shake it by moving back to more familiar territory. For some lamebrained reason, the man determined to go for help, telling his bride to keep as much distance between herself and the bear as possible. She apparently tried, from all the evidence gathered afterwards, but with the male gone, the bruin easily closed the distance and went in for the kill. When her husband returned with help, they found his bride's partiaolly-ea ten body lying there in the woods. Had the couple been carrying a small 6-shot .357 like a Model 13/65, it would have most likely saved the day. True, a modern Model 60 or a Ruger SP-101 might have done the same, but the 13/65 with a 3-inch barrel would have been even better.

Anyway, my sister used a Model 10 for her qualification course and she loved it. But one of the first things she asked was, "Does this thing shoot .357?" Had it done so, she would have left a deposit on a new one.

The Model 10, however, has always been a remarkable gun with fabulous balance. For years it was the quintessential police gun.

What the guy loaned on the gun should no in any way determine what he sells it for. Bad pawnbroker mentality.

Thst being said you got a good price. Great gun. My model 10 would be one if the last gubs I would ever let go.

You have to know pawn shop math.
Loan 1/3 the resale value.
Buy for no more then 1/2 the resale value or 2/3 the resale value if it will move fast.
I worked for a pawn broker for 3 years and learned a few things.
Not long ago I picked up a like new Beretta 92FS with 2 mags and the case for $425 and a like new FNS9 with case and 3 mags for $470.
At the same shop where I got the Mod. 10, they had a clean Beretta 92A1. They offered to sell it to me for $450, but I passed.

I know I posted few pictures on the "other" forum, but I just found one of my 10-6S&W. Picked it up at my local gunstore which had a barrel full of them come in from the prison system as trade-ins. This was sitting at the back of the shelf in a dark corner. It had obviously been reblued and needed it again. It had the original target walnut grips that had been sanded down and revarnished so that the checkering was mainly seen but not felt. I put the Pachmayr on it because I prefer it.

After negotiations in which I strongly pointed out the cosmetic flaws we decided on $159.95 plus tax. Since I had a $25 gift certificate from Christmas this was a great time to use it. So my cost was under $140 out the door. They had been asking $199-$259 for the other 10's in stock in various conditions, this was a steal.

I found the original S&W holster to go with it and I use it as my RV/camping gun, loaded with 127-gr Federal +P+ Hydra-shok ammo.
I wound up replacing the hammer and trigger because someone had tried to polish them and the sear faces had gotten polished through the hard coating and wear was evident. The rebound block looked like someone had dragged it through a gravel parking lot. I spent some time cleaning it up inside. Now it has a sweet trigger and despite its homely exterior is a very accurate shooter.



PS- If you have no strong attachment to that Pachmayr I'd gladly take it off your hands.

The only thing better than a 10-6 is a 10-5.
That standard barrel taper just does somethin for me.
