Pickup rifle racks.
We all remember them. Some of us had them in the rear window of our pickups. They were great for rifles, but good for lots of other things too.
Bows
Fishing poles
Lariats
Cattle prods

....etc
So what is the modern version?
Something relatively quick access yet maybe more discreet.
I still would like to tote a rifle or two-piece fly rod in the cab without it being on the seat or floorboards.
I guess the four door pickup killed the gunrack.
Does anyone have the new Cordura rifle bags that attach to the back of the front seat?

My 79 still uses a back glass rifle rack. They still sell them. They still work fine. Mine has a model 500 and an AR in it most times. Covers my woods needs.

The problem is that nobody buys a work truck to work. They buy a lux truck with a 5 foot bed to haul 1 bag of recyclable goods and 8 feet of leg room for the back 3 passengers. Im 6 foot 3 and have long arms and I couldn't reach a rifle in my 2021 F150s back glass. I just settle for the sig in the lockable center console. Some f150 have so many options that the payload is under 1200 lb. Lol. Add in a heavy barrel rifle, a brush guard and a tonneau cover and you may not have payload for the driver and 4 skinny passengers in your 80k dollar platinum or king ranch.

Why they put a power sliding rear glass in them is beyond me not like the driver can hand beer out the back glass in the hay field to the guy on the back stacking. Wouldn't fit much hay in a 5.5 foot bed anyway.

If you put guns visible in your vehicle in most places you will end up with broken windows and no guns. I transport my weapons in cases that do not look like gun cases or, if they do, it's the rectangular Pelican-style case. If I was going to put something in my truck to keep guns in it would be something like this:

If you see a coyote or predator and your guns are in that monstrosity then you may as well left them at home. Completly misses the purpose of a rifle rack.

If I'm going to Applebee's I don't carry my rifle at all. I agree it would be a bad idea to leave it exposed. If I have my rifle in my truck i want it a bit more accessible than having to get out to find it

Nice concept, especially if you don’t require full use of your pickup bed. Most folks I know, including myself, have need for the bed, oftentimes the entire bed, so, as nice as that is, it’s useless to me.

miss them, I'm just old enough to remember them. Dad always had one tho for years ny has been weird about having guns in them, you need to be alowed hunting season so long they weren't loaded. Now I think they would arrest you for just having the rack. I miss Indian blanket seat covers to, probably can't call them that anymore either. Wonder if there still made.

I remember seeing the racks used for all kinds of stuff, fishing poles, canes, poolq, clothes, tire beaters, hats, air freshener, levels, dry your gloves to.

A buddy has a shelf that uses the sun visor mountings to attach. The visors then attach to the bottom of the shelf.

Its called the Shelf-It and it works very well. Had one in my bronco but it obstructs a bit of view i needed when offroading. So i took it out. They are made of aluminum with a flocking glued on. Mine was $100 about 5 years ago. It mounts in the place of the sun visors, which are relocated to the shelf.

It will hold a scoped rifle, but not an AR. At least not in the "trough" of the shelf.

I used it just for storage and a CB mount. The visors in my bronco do not have center supports, so they flop around some

Ive also seen some rifle holders that mount to the ceiling.

When I got my first pickup I couldn’t wait to mount a back window gun rack, but while all my buddys had a old 30-30 hanging back there I had a 98 Mauser, and a lariat, and a pair of ski goggles…

And of course the Indian (feather, not dot) blanket woven seat cover!

I like all the past tense. Lol.

Out here in the country rifle racks are far from rare in a regular cab truck. Walmart still has them. Both in suction cup models and the chisel ended ones that you drive under the window seal.

I remember the indian blanket covers. I hated those. When you was working with no shirt they were pretty scratchy. Lol. Jc Whitney was a big source of those.

Yeah. Unfortunately my shortbed has a crossover toolbox and a 75gal fuel tank in it. Not much room left over.

Yup. Lol
I had a couple of those. I carried a maglight and a roll of Copenhagen in the rifle scabbard.

That’s the modern version, at least around here.

I use the power slider in the rear window of my truck a lot. If I want to open my front window while driving, the rear slider helps equalize cab pressure with less wind noise than opening a rear window.

They do that. And if I want to hear my 5.0 in a tunnel the glass works for that too. Lol

If anyone used a camper shell they would be handy for that too. Most supercrew only have a 5.5 foot box though so I'd have to put the tail gate down to sleep. Lol. My 21 is actually my first short bed. All our trucks are 8 foot beds or 10 foot flat bed. It was actually pretty disturbing to have to leave the tailgate down to haul a standard lawn mower.

That's why I have a 10ft trailer....dumb as it may be.....

I think thieves killed the gun rack, that and it becoming a no no for Highschool kids to have their dove gun in the truck. The 4 door made them as useless as the “beer window”, too.

I have made a couple for my own use, using ATV mounts. This one is the quickest location for me to put into action and is up high enough to make it a “bend down and look up”, in order to see it.

Maybe I just need to upgrade my truck. This looks pretty good....except it would be full of tools instead....

If you have to get out to get it, I’d just put it in a soft case behind the rear seat. Out of sight for sure and at least it’s inside the cab. That looks like a handy spot for a cooler though. Now that you have to have steps and handles to get inside the bed of a pickup…
