What's everybody's thoughts on using one of these (or similar) for an ammo storage "safe"?

The only problems I see with using a JoBox are that you would need to be REALLY sure it sat on a surface that could handle the weight (say a concrete slab at ground level) because if you did actually manage to fill your average JoBox it's going to weigh somewhere on the order of 8,000 to 12,000 lbs (or about 3-5 TONS) so you couldn't put it anywhere you wouldn't park a car or large truck.

Also, now that I think of it, it's doubtful that you'd fill it full anyway because it'd be a serious pain to get to the stuff in the bottom AND the weight of the upper layers might crush the lower layers unless everything was in ammo boxes or similar.

/\ Jeff, is that what the lead you can buy for casting bullets looks like? Those bars in the lower right corner?

Yep.

I smelt wheel weights down and pour them into ingot moulds. I like to keep at least 100 - 150 pounds of ingots on hand at any given time. Rest of the wheel weights and raw/pure lead sits in buckets--especially during the summer. Not much fun smelting lead down here in Texas during the summer.
