I am looking hard at the Piexon Jet Protector. I do have a concealed carry permit and do carry a handgun but I am having thoughts about the Jet Protector. I have seen the videos ect but was wondering if anyone has actually seen this thing in action or used it. I already know about the piercing effect if used to close to the target. My reasons are simple. My son just turned 9 years old. We are and have always been a gun friendly house. I grew up in a gun friendly house. I have handled guns, showed him proper operation and stressed safety with all firearms. There is no mystery about what is behind the safe door. I keep everything locked up at home including a bedside coded lockbox. However, I worry about it when we go camping or on trips. I just think that if the Jet Protector is effective and a viable tool it would put me at ease in certain situations where I cant lock up a handgun. It would also reduce my liability if the situation goes bad. I know the most important thing is safety of my family but if its effective it would be a useful tool. Any input would be appreciated.

Handguns aren't a guaranteed one stop shot device, and the show COPS has plenty of episodes where LEO strength OC sprays were ineffective. It has elevated the reaction of those who were sprayed with it in many cases.

The police use it because they are required to only use the amount of force necessary to subdue a resistant detainee. They aren't supposed to be just shooting them on the spot, due to concerns about civil rights - which are entirely justified. For our use, not so much - all too often it just escalates the situation. And we are not required to only meet force with equal force. It doesn't work if it's a 17 year old girl and a 240 pound repeat offender.

Proper weapons handling and gun security would still be needed - can't have the kids spraying each other in the back yard. So that won't change and the requirement is still there.

Was never a fan of any of the explosive-propelled OC. It's easier to miss with them than you might think, you only get two shots, and they don't put a lot of fluid down range. I don't know how viscous it is either, because one major advantage of spray OC is that it can drip down the forehead into the eyes if the perp is wearing glasses. They're also very expensive for what you get (even very good spray OC in large cans is less than $30). Another problem is that I could find no information as to the formulation or potency of Piexon's OC, which is usually code for "not very potent."

Tirod - I agree about the handling and security but I would rather my child spray his sister rather than shoot her. Its strange and I know the possibility is very remote but I have been thinking a lot about that lately. My son was recently knocked off his bike and bitten by a pitbull mix that wasnt controlled by the owner. Luckily it ran off right away (my son was up the street ahead of me on my bike). I think the oc would be useful in that case as well if the dog had stuck around.

Bad product compared to the ones discussed under the OC thread.

Limited range, area of effect, and number of shots compared to the cone type OC canisters. The only thing it has going for it is that it looks kinda like a gun (which is a negative in my opinion) and that it is kinda compact.

glistam & hso hit the nail on the head.

I'll also add that just because it is 'less - lethal' does not mean it can't harm. I believe there is a lawsuit pending regarding this unit, if I'm not mistaken. I'd rather see you go with the Kimber PB if you wanted to go this route.

Kimber is the same company, they just changed the name.

Not a suit (yet) but the JPX was used by a police officer on a suspect from too close a range and it permanently blinded her. He's been fired and is facing four felonies right now.

The little red one...

For the record, I don't like either one. But if the OP chooses this path, then the Kimber PB would be a little (keyword) safer. It has somewhat of a safety, unlike the JPX. It also doesn't come out nearly as forceful. Either way I would be very leery having this around if there was even a remote possibility that a child could get ahold of it. Irreversible damage if used at close range.
