State senator: 'I'm going to be watching Pizza Hut'

JENNIFER JACOBS • REGISTER STAFF WRITER • April 1, 2008

A state senator said he would stop buying Pizza Hut products if the pizza chain fires a Des Moines delivery man who shot a teen who tried to rob him at gunpoint.

Sen. Brad Zaun, a Republican from Urbandale, said from what he’s read, he understands that James William Spiers is a single father raising a daughter, and had the legal right to carry a weapon.

"I think what he did was the right thing," Zaun told fellow senators today. "If was in a situation to protect my family, protect myself, to continue being a father, I would’ve done the same thing."

Zaun said it was appropriate for Pizza Hut to suspend Spiers while authorities sort out the case, but "I’m going to be watching Pizza Hut."

"What I want everybody to know ... is that there is people out there supporting this man and his right to defend himself," Zaun said.

Don't know if it's an April Fools gift, there is a previous article dated the 29th about the event, as for this most recent article I'm not sure if it's legit or not.

Yes, its legit. I live in Iowa and most of the repub. state lawmakers that have spoken about this incident are in support of the delivery driver. Any reasonable person supports his actions.

Is anyone able to find an email for the corporate HQ? I couldn't find it on their site. Pizza Hut is my favorite pizza, but I could make do with another company if they fire this driver.

Pizza Hut is (used to be?) owned by Pepsi and both corporations give financial support to the gun-grabbers. They don't get a dime of my money already any way.

It isn't the first time. There was a guy in Ohio a few years back that droppd a full mag of 9mm into a guy, I think it was about 15 shots, as a Pizza Hut delivery driver.

No charges, but they canned him.

Hey--I'm with this 100%

Here was the thread I posted a few days back. No need to bother with it unless you want some background.

http://thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=351503

Take 5 minutes--call and let them know how you feel. Tell them you like their pizza (or at least BUY it once in a while!)--and that YOU ARE CONFIDENT that they will stand by their employee James Spiers who was attacked in Des Moines, Iowa. Keep it that simple if you can.

Pizza Hut, Inc. 14841 Dallas Parkway Dallas, TX 75254 Customer Feedback Phone: 1-800-948-8488

no email--but CALL toll free.

One thing I said earlier is worth repeating--I wouldn't bother about trying to change their employee weapons policy--lets see if we can save this man's job and keep the focus on just this case. Save the man and you largly invalidate the boilerplate for the next guy or gal.

Posts: 24 I agree with Neo-Luddite. A quick note from a few hundred people will possibly go a long way to help this guy out. The contact info for the company that owns this particular franchise is below. Contacting Pizza Hut and the franchise owner surely can't hurt.

not any more, most are now owned by either Yum foods or by franchisers... their corporate office is in dallas...

they most likely wont fire this guy immediately because of the press, but will wait a few weeks or months and let him go for another reason... late one too many times, didnt shave, etc...

And just a hint...

DO NOT tell the nice folks that you hate their pizza and wouldn't buy it anyway, that you don't like their past attitude about guns, and wouldn't shop there anyway, etc., etc...

THAT MAKES THEM COMPLETELY IGNORE YOU. But if they're in danger of LOSING CUSTOMERS (if you will never buy their stuff, then you're not a customer - okay? Do NOT make me get out the clue-bat...), they tend to get nervous.

Could we focus on an outcome here?

I like how you keep it real, bogie, Inject a little bit of reality into the thread. BTW, I would like to borrow that clue-bat sometime. Sounds handy.

This is what bothers me. I know we know this mentality, though I haven't heard it phrased quite this way before: "employees are not allowed to carry guns 'because we believe that that is the safest for everybody.'" I'm curious to know how exactly in this case the employee not carrying a gun would have been safer.

I'll be making a few choice phone calls when the rest of the world wakes up.

It has been a WHILE since I read about the Pepsi/Pizza Hut link and their anti-gun policies and support. Out of the companies listed, Taco Bell is the only one I ever use.

Yum! Brands is now headquartered in Louisville, KY. It owns Kentucky Fried Chicken, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, Long John Silvers, and the restaraunt portion of the A&W Rootbeer brand. Much of its corporate operations are, however, still in Plano, TX from when the group was owned by Pepsico.

Here is a list of other Restaurants which are gun unfriendly
Restaurants
Buffalo Wild Wings
Bungalow Billiards
Kabuki Japanese Steak House
Macado's
Outback Steakhouse (Fairfax)
Red Lobster
TGI Fridays

I was listening to the Man Cow which is a Chicago morning radio guy, He called a "friend" of his in the Des moines that owns a sub shop and got this driver a job at better pay and did somthing to help him out on the legal bills I had to stop listening before I could hear about that part though. Man Cow is a gun owner supporter!
