CA law requires (non-CCW) handguns to be in a locked case when transporting, and while the trunk of a car, to my understanding serves as a locked case, transporting from the house to the car, and from the car to the range are required to be cased as well. A range bag apparently won't fill the requirement unless it is lockable..
I've been using MTM pistol cases, the 806 has been a good one for me, small enough to fit inside a modest range bag along with the rest of the shooting accouterments and is reasonably priced. The 808 is larger and can fit two pistols but I find it difficult to close and takes up too much room in the range bag.
I'm wondering if any other states had similar transport requirements and what solutions you might use to stay within the law?

Florida law requires firearms to be "Securely Encased" while being transported in, on, to, or from a vehicle. Securely encased may be a glove box, console, trunk, hard or soft case OR a snap-strap retention holster. These encasements do not have to be lockable or, necessarily locked. Fully loaded, in a snap holster in plain view on the passenger seat is perfectly legal, if not particularly wise.

However, unsecured transportation is a big no-no. No rifle racks in the back of the cab. Concealed carry only with a permit, open carry only when hunting or fishing, or whilst transporting into/from a gunshop.

Strangely, muzzleloaders are not considered "firearms" by FL because they don't use "ammunition" so they technically bypass most of our gun laws. A few folks try to get a rise out of the deputies here every year by openly carrying C&B revolvers and making YouTube videos of it.

It doesn't end well, and all they accomplish is making responsible gun owners look like douchbags.

Most ranges around here want the firearms to be "encased" as a show of safety. But that could be a softside case or a sock.

I think the (don't quote me) GA authorities would like to see any firearm in a vehicle encased in something. Between car and home I don't think it matters but prudence say you don't want a neighbor calling because they think you're brandishing.

Our biggest gun store in metro-ATL has all sorts of used gun cases for sale. Glock, S&W, Sig, etc. I bought one to put some video test gear in. Freaks some people out when they see me coming with it.

Zippers have little holes in them. Tiny junk locks are $.97 at Walmart. Walmart also happens to sell trapper keepers, insulated casserole carriers and the like...find one with 2 zippers.
