Hard to tell from the pic. Is it stamped or engraved? Could be Chief of Police but with the periods after each letter it might as easily be an individual's initials and badge number. Maybe some kind of presentation/retirement gift. If you're REALLY interested you could pay Colt 75 bucks for a letter and it will tell you who the gun was originally shipped to. It might have been some kind of agency with those initials.
Well I hate to call the obvious but the C.O.P. on your Colt Official Police model gun is an acronym for Colt Official Police. The N 127 is the inventory number.
My FFL, who sells and appraises estate collections, c&r, etc. says it stands for City of Pittsburgh. Thanks for checking the archives, Fuff. I take it you found no Pittsburgh on your list?
