since I already had my first handgun-sig sauer p226 9mm,I am considering what second handgun for me...

maybe .45 calibre? 1911 seems the most classic .45 handgun...

but I just confused when I have to pick one specific model of 1911...colt,springfield armory, sig sauer,Smith & Wesson.....

I think the best second handgun you can own is something in .22. It's not defense-ready exactly, but when it comes to putting rounds downrange in an inexpensive fashion it's hard to beat $0.02/shot!

My choice is the Ruger MKII, but there are many other excellent options available.

$0.01,
Robert

Well if you've got yer heart set on a 1911 I'd recommend S&W. They have a wide variety of models to choose from and if they're as good as the Target model I got (it has adjustable sights so they call it a Target) you will not be dissatisfied.

On the other hand if you're willing to branch out then think CZ-75B SA in .40 S&W. Single action version of the standard CZ and has drop free mags. Very accurate - very reliable - easy to take down and clean.

CZ's are the best kept gun secret in USA. High quality weapons for not a lot of money. The 75 series is supposedly used by more military and police in Europe than any other handgun.

I've got 3 CZ's (two 75's, one 9mm, one .40 S&W and a 550 American in .308). They are all very fine weapons and I recommend them highly to anyone who cares to ask.

+1 on the .22 a .45 is a nice gun but you can't shoot it all day on $20. kind of hypocritical but my second is a .357mag, it was $150, so i could not in my right mind pass it up

Every handgunner should have, at a minimum,
a .22 rimfire,
a 1911 pattern .45,
a .38/.357 revolver,
Pick one now ( I also suggest the .22) and work towards the rest later.
and buy quality iron- a better value in the long term. You are off to a good start with your Sig.

My first handgun was also a Sig P226 9mm, fabulous pistol. Although I wanted a 1911, I decided to go the .22 route for my second gun. After much deliberation I ended up with a Ruger 22/45. My thought process was that since the grip angle and controls are 'similar' to a 1911, it would help me when I got my 1911...eventually. Did it help? Maybe, maybe not. There are a lot more differences than there are similarities, but I've never regretted the purchase. The 22/45 is a great pistol, but probably no more than a Buckmark or Trailside, or etc.

However, if you go straight for the 1911, I finally got a SA MilSpec, and I've been very happy with it. However, there are hundreds and hundreds of threads here and elsewhere that debate the various models and makers of both 1911's and .22s, as well as 9mm's if you decide you want another one. :D

When you make a decision, be sure to search and you find more information than you could ever need.

seems similar situation as long gun...It's wise to get a .22 handgun to practise my marksmanship and handling?

what about .22 conversion kit?

+3 on the 22 handgun. My suggestion would be a Ruger Mark II (have one) or III with a bull barrel or the hunter version which is more expensive. Good shooting guns.

I have been eyeing up the Smith 1911's for a while now. Heard good things about them after the initial production run. You can't go wrong with a Kimber 1911 in whatever configuration you prefer. I would also like to get their 22 in the 1911 style.

I generally prefer revolvers. That is one of the reasons that I have not gotten either a Kimber or Smith 1911 as of yet. So many guns... so few dollars.

You could go with Kimber and get the Kimber conversion unit. But other 45 to 22 conversion kits work in 1911s.

thanks. BTW, 22 conversion kits work in other 1911s(colt,s&w,springfield armory...)?

It should be mandatory that every handgunner own a medium frame 4" .357 revolver. Sights, adjusable or fixed...I'ts up to you......Essex

I am going to go against the tide here on the .22. My first handgun was a Hi-Standard Sport King .22 and it wasn't long unitil my second was a Browning Hi-Power, followed shortly thereafter by a S&W 586. At that point my .22 very rarely got any range time. Why, because it simply didn't float my boat, it felt like I was shooting a BB gun. Let me make this very clear, I have nothing against the .22 but if it isn't what you want don't get one. I don't have the luxury of spending countless hours shooting so when I do get the opportunity I am going to shoot what I enjoy. I personally think that a nice .357 revolver would make an excellent addition, but before you allow us to tell you what to get go out and rent or borrow a variety of guns if at all possible so you can pick what you find at this time most interesting and enjoyable. You mentioned several different .45's so I am assuming that they have most of your attention. I have a couple of Colts, series 80 enhanced versions, and both have been utterly reliable out of the box. I am however, by no means an authority on .45's.

Its hard to go wrong with any brand these days so just pick one you like. Two important factors I can recomend are beavertail grip saftey and novak sights. Good luck

Freedom Arms model 83 in .454 Casull with 7.5" barrel.....or not.
If you're set on the .45acp be sure to check out the Springfield XD. In fact, spend some time shopping around. Go to a gun range where they offer guns to rent. Try out some different makes and models. Usually they aren't expensive to rent. It's fun to try different kinds and you may stumble onto something you really want, but wouldn't have thought of otherwise.

A .22 is a good idea for the finances, but I favor my "fun" .22 over my 22/45. I've got a Firestorm .22, and only shoot Aquila hyper-velocity rounds. This bullet tumbles in this gun and creates crisp holes in the paper that look like holes from .38 wadcutters. It's also got quite a nice little blast for a .22. The 22/45 is, do I dare say, Boring, and is now for sale.

For more blast than your 9mm, I'd go for a .357 mag. revolver.

Have you considered a Sig in .45?

I don't realize the importance of beavertail grip saftey and novak sights, could you elaborate on them? thanks.

:banghead: nearly go to bankcrupcy..

Get either a auto or revolver in .22 LR and you can shoot all day for $10 or so.

It is also easy to setup a basement to shoot .22 compared to other calibers.
