22 Handguns

Revolvers - S&W Outdoorsman, S&W K-22 Target Masterpiece, S&W Model 17 - the K-22 became the 17 in '57 when S&W went to model #s, S&W 617 - Stainless M17 that you can even get with a 10 round cylider now, Colt Officers Target in 22LR and their other 22 Revos - I'm not very Colt knowledgeable, or even a Taurus 94 if ya want a bargain. Of those only the Taurus 94 and the S&W 617 are available new, the other ones are from the golden age of wheelguns and may take some looking to get. I have a K-22 and love it - one of the most beautiful guns made in terms of craftsmanship and very fun to shoot.

Autos - Colt Woodsman, Ruger MKI/II/III, Ruger 22/45, Browning Buckmark, or 22 LR conversion kit since you can get them for almost any popular semi-auto now. The Woodsman and MKI/II are older, The MKIII, 22/45, and Buckmark are available new. All a great little semi autos.

If you have any children maybe take them with you to the gunshop to pick out the 22. I think that would be a great way to get them interested, and make it feel like its the family 22 so they have some sense of pride of ownership in it.

.22 or .45

Well all I can add to this is that everything that these guys have said about .22's is true in my expierence. I would also suggest the Ruger MKII. But if you do have your heart set on a .45 I would reiterate what some otheres have said about Kimber and Springfield.

I've never heard a bad thing about the P220. In fact, I think it's one of the few Non 1911s that even 1911istas won't talk trash about. it's a fine weapon and you'd have no problems if you bought one.

I think some of this should be based on you intetion as a shooter. Are you buying fro CCW, defense, collecting, fun?

If it were me and I were using these guns for defense or carry I'd try to go with a Sig P239 in 9mm. Same system, same feel, same caliber.

I think everyone has pretty much covered the other options/reasons.

I will add in a XD .45 if it hasn't already been mentioned.

My working collection is a Sig P226 .40 S&W and a Sig P239 .40 S&W.

For fun I own a Sig P228 and a Ruger SP101

I'd get a 4" 357 magnum, very versatile gun. You can play around with 38's, or you can shoot full power magnum loads. I'd highly recommend the Taurus tracker line.
