Please help me ID my grandfather's sword

He gave this to me after about 10 years ago. He has had it forever and it stayed in his attic for most of his life. He got it from his father. I have NO idea where this thing came from, where it was made, or what it was used for. Any help would be great. Included are some pics:

I know squat about swords, but I will bump this up to the top to help you get some answers.

Looks like a German infantry sword, late 1800s, but that's a completely off-the-cuff SWAG. I don't have my books in front of me, and I don't know the topic well enough to speak with authority from memory.

Solingen is a German blade maker, or more likely the town where many blade makers operate, sort of like a Shefield marking for British knives. Historically Solingen blades are pretty good quality, though I've had one hunting knife with the marking that was not that great.

Coronach's id sounds right to me.
Either Infantry or Artillery, the blade looks less curved than European calvary sabers I've seen, which generally means ground use.
It doesn't look like it was ever decorated so its not likely to be a dress sword.

From the stains on both grip and blade I suspect its seen combat.

It just occurred to me that the Confederacy imported many swords during the civil war, and Germany was one of the major suppliers.
