If I've said it once, I've said it a dozen times: I'm a plinker at heart. Sure, I enjoy trying my (unskilled) hand at some distance shooting, and trying to put the bullets through one hole, but I grew up on much less formal shooting. I've killed soup cans by the hundreds. A friend of mine has been telling me for years that I should "come out to the farm," and do some shooting. Yesterday, I finally did.

I loaded up my 10/22, my Ruger American Rimfire, and my 22/45.

Naturally, I also had my Shield Plus (it's like American Express: don't leave home without it). Now, when I tell you this guy "gets away from it all....," he gets away from it all. I drove about an hour from the metropolis that is my hometown (population ~12K), out into much less populated areas, turned off the highway, and had to drive another half an hour after I left the paved road. I lost cell service a good 3 miles before I got to my destination. He was down in a holler at the edge of national forest property, with a cozy, well-kept cabin.

A couple of his friends showed up, we ate some lunch, watched the Hogs win a ball game (WPS!), and then wandered out back to do a little shooting. My friend who is approaching 70 has some hearing loss, and we had discussed suppressors in the past. I don't think he'd ever heard one in person before. Unfortunately, I forgot to grab a box of subsonics to go with me. Fortunately, he had a box on hand. So we loaded up mags and headed out back. I think I was the only one there who had ever shot a suppressed gun. And I'll tell you that nothing I own puts a smile on faces the way that suppressor does.

So we spent some time with the suppressed RAR, then turned to other stuff. I got to shoot my friend's G27 (I'd never shot one of those), an LCP 2(?)(never shot one of those, either), passed my Shield Plus around for everyone to try, then moved the suppressor over to my 22/45. (Wanna feel like John Wick? That one will do it.). I should probably apologize to my friend, because I think I've just cost him some money. It will be money well spent, though. I suspect he'll look a little harder at suppressors, and I was able to suggest some good trainers in his area for his wife. (She was plenty competent with her pistol, but she wants some more training. Who am I to tell her no, right?)

We probably didn't shoot much over 100 rounds, even all together. But it was a fantastic day of plinking and good company.

An excellent choice for an activity. Eliminates stress and some good all around fun. I have been exactly two weeks in the last seven. Been to Europe and to the Pacific plus DC. Got three weeks before heading out again. I am going to take a couple days off and doing exactly what you have done on my own land. Can’t wait.

Although it was a 50 mile trip, I used to do that on the Pawnee Grasslands. You could just about fire any gun at almost any azimuth at any elevation without hitting anything but the planet.

Plenty of practice on random targets (usually rocks) at unknown distances. Although I love the 1911, the best practice was with a .357 revolver with a nice high front sight painted red, which allowed one to raise it above the rear sight specific amounts at varying ranges.

Scared the hell out of plenty of rocks and cowpies

Sounds like you had a great time "holing" stuff besides just paper.

rust collector: a friend seldom shoots his many guns partly due to his multiple horses (and he's not yet retired), and really likes his CZ🇨🇿 rifle in .22LR.

If you folks (Heaven forbid) were to learn that you had only ie six months "Left", would you begin shooting at any different types of "freelance" objects, or just typical targets?

My guns and targets are such that I won't have any regrets. Fashion means nothing to me, nor does the most popular rifle have much appeal.
Even degraded vision (small stroke etc) or bad arthritis could suddenly handicap many of us.

Thanks for sharing. That sounds like a great time. I still train a lot with my defensive firearms, but find myself spending more and more time plinking away with .22’s. It was not uncommon to tear through a full brick every weekend when I was a kid and believe that played a big part in developing my skills with firearms as an adult.

That's as good as it gets, Spats!

To get away from it all I can drive 35 miles, drop off the western edge of the Llano, go down a steep, rough road, go another 1/2 mile, turn left, go another 1/2 mile and be on a road that leads straight to an old oilwell location almost at the bottom of the caprock. I have a 250 foot high backstop, can range out to a half mile or drive right up on the location to shoot handguns. The odds are highly in my favor that the only people I will see are the ones that accompany me. If another human appears it will be a pumper going to check a lease far away. BLM land.

I bought a Caldwell stable table just to use for this. The only catch is it gets extremely hot in the summer. Fall and warmer winter days are ideal though. Outdoor shooting in the spring is extremely iffy due to the high winds we have and it seems to only take about a week to switch from spring to summer. We already have the wind this year, Supposed to hit 60 mph today.

I haven't shot my 10/22 only one time since I moved to the new house but I'm going to get it out soon. I have been shooing the snot out of my G44. Some weeks I don't shoot at all but some weeks when work is a lil slow and we get a lil more daylight I'll shoot a few hundred rounds out of it or more in a week. I still haven't changed the sights but I did fiddle with em and even though it's not a target pistol I can put em where I want em.

I stocked myself up on 9mm pretty decently and have been trying to curb my urge to shoot my 9mm's every day so I pull out the G44

Perfection. My favorite shooting activity by far is simply wandering the woods or the desert with a revolver on my hip, occasionally killing pinecones and dirt clods, maybe grabbing a quick snooze with my hat on my face, and being careful to accomplish absolutely nothing.
