Plinker's Paradise

This is what my son and I did one day the week after Christmas. The rifle is a Remington 572 that I got for Christmas when I was 12 in ‘79. Handgun is a more recently obtained Buckmark.

We don’t have much interest in shooting paper, so I got some rimfire steels. We also like to shoot Pringles. I made cuts in logs and we stand the chips upright in the cuts. Lots of fun and cheap to shoot. Birds and critters are happy to clean up when we are done. Son worked at a produce market for a while last spring. Boss let him bring home subpar produce for targets. HP Mini-Mags and citrus fruit are a fun combination.

Too bad there’s not a program to get random politicians out for a day like that, no cameras, no media, just an hour or so of plinking.

Never know, might change a few minds from “guns are only for killing”.
I don't think most of them are dumb enough to actually believe guns are all bad. After all, they sure don't tell their body guards to leave theirs at home. Instead, being anti-gun brings them votes and donations, and approval from people who are in fact dumb enough to believe that guns are kill people instead of other scum of the earth killing people.

Why does plinking have to be a .22lr? I call any shooting for fun plinking.
As long as I'm not trying to archive anything more than just burning up ammo I call it plinking.
Frozen milk jugs of water is good reactive targets just about any time.
Yep. Have to agree with you on that one. We also like to chase cans with bird shot and blow up water jugs or whatever comes to mind with buck shot. It has given me a great perspective on just exactly what a 12 gauge load of 00 can do.

Hi All, I'm baaack. Sorry, I've been offline for a bit.

Speedo66 and I apparently had the same thought:

So much effort is necessarily spent on the practical aspects of firearms ownership (organized target, self defense, etc) why not include the therapeutic benefits of a safe, relaxing hobby time? For me, it's also wholesome family time, with a responsibility teaching time, especially for the grandkids.

I had a pretty good day myself plinking today - but it's not nearly as fun by yourself.

I made up a game - "Dinner or not". 8-in round steel plate @ 50 yards or so. 5 shots with your .22 rifle, iron sights. If you get a hit - you get dinner. No hits, no dinner.

It's a challenge for me, especially with a short barrel. But it's getting easier; I may need to kick it out 5 or 10 more yards...

If I've said it once, I've said it a dozen times: I'm a plinker at heart. Sure, I enjoy trying my (unskilled) hand at some distance shooting, and trying to put the bullets through one hole, but I grew up on much less formal shooting. I've killed soup cans by the hundreds. A friend of mine has been telling me for years that I should "come out to the farm," and do some shooting. Yesterday, I finally did.

I loaded up my 10/22, my Ruger American Rimfire, and my 22/45.

Naturally, I also had my Shield Plus (it's like American Express: don't leave home without it). Now, when I tell you this guy "gets away from it all....," he gets away from it all. I drove about an hour from the metropolis that is my hometown (population ~12K), out into much less populated areas, turned off the highway, and had to drive another half an hour after I left the paved road. I lost cell service a good 3 miles before I got to my destination. He was down in a holler at the edge of national forest property, with a cozy, well-kept cabin.

A couple of his friends showed up, we ate some lunch, watched the Hogs win a ball game (WPS!), and then wandered out back to do a little shooting. My friend who is approaching 70 has some hearing loss, and we had discussed suppressors in the past. I don't think he'd ever heard one in person before. Unfortunately, I forgot to grab a box of subsonics to go with me. Fortunately, he had a box on hand. So we loaded up mags and headed out back. I think I was the only one there who had ever shot a suppressed gun. And I'll tell you that nothing I own puts a smile on faces the way that suppressor does.

So we spent some time with the suppressed RAR, then turned to other stuff. I got to shoot my friend's G27 (I'd never shot one of those), an LCP 2(?)(never shot one of those, either), passed my Shield Plus around for everyone to try, then moved the suppressor over to my 22/45. (Wanna feel like John Wick? That one will do it.). I should probably apologize to my friend, because I think I've just cost him some money. It will be money well spent, though. I suspect he'll look a little harder at suppressors, and I was able to suggest some good trainers in his area for his wife. (She was plenty competent with her pistol, but she wants some more training. Who am I to tell her no, right?)

We probably didn't shoot much over 100 rounds, even all together. But it was a fantastic day of plinking and good company.
A suppressed 22lr bolt action with subsonic ammo is something else... stupid quiet 🤫. My CZ 457 Pro Varmint will stabilize the 60gr Aguila stuff so I have a small stash of it for showing people how quiet it can be.
Have you shot a 45 auto glock suppressed? Sounds like a nailgun...

rust collector: a friend seldom shoots his many guns partly due to his multiple horses (and he's not yet retired), and really likes his CZ🇨🇿 rifle in .22LR.

If you folks (Heaven forbid) were to learn that you had only ie six months "Left", would you begin shooting at any different types of "freelance" objects, or just typical targets?

My guns and targets are such that I won't have any regrets. Fashion means nothing to me, nor does the most popular rifle have much appeal.
Even degraded vision (small stroke etc) or bad arthritis could suddenly handicap many of us.
I LOVE my CZ 457 Pro Varmint with my SilencerCo Sparrow. It stabilizes the 60gr Aguila stuff and it really likes just about anything but the 60gr stuff is stupid quiet and the Federal 45gr Suppressor ammo is decent as well. I just put a pic rail and a 6-24 scope on it that needs to be zeroed...

I have not, but I’ll bet it’s cool!

Is this a new diet technique?

No, not exactly ( )... just me trying to make things interesting where a 4-in plate at 30-something yards is too easy-peasy.

I could either use greater distance or a smaller plate to increase the difficulty. Or maybe less shots; 5 is generous and I may go to just 3.

Also, most small game isn't 8 inches across and 6 inches would probably be a bit more realistic. With 4 inches being even more realistic. Gets really hard to do with irons at such distance, though.

Anyway, it's a good way to use the 8-in plate and make it worth walking out to that distance to post it and retrieve it.
