I've just started to pocket carry and I'm wondering how many do or do not use a holster and why?

Thanks for your feedback.

I haven't made a commitment to pocket carry, yet, so I didn't vote. I'm thinking about it, but so far haven't jumped.

What I understand is that there is a finite chance that something will snag on the trigger if you carry without a holster, and the results would not be pleasant.

Disadvantage of holster carry is holster staying with pistol instead of staying with pocket on draw. Advantage is trigger protection and, to some extent, keeping the pistol cleaner.

If you are a meticulous sort of person, and can guarantee a "reserved" pocket that will never have anything else in it, you might consider pocket carry without a holster. Holsterless carry probably means more frequent cleaning.

(This is one puzzle that I don't have an answer for, and one of the things keeping me from making the jump to pocket carry...)

I always keep my pocket gun in a holster.
Why?

#1 To keep front sight and other things from snagging on draw.

#2 To keep pocket lint and other junk out of the action and moving parts of the pistol.

#3 To keep the pistol positioned properly in my pocket.

#4 To keep from wearing holes in my jeans.

#5 To hide the outline of the gun and make it more concealed.

#6 To protect the gun form water and perspiration.

#7 To keep the trigger covered.

I'm sure there's more but that's right off the top of my head.

I must also confess I do occasionally (Sunday's) carry a NAA mini and I don't holster it.

Since I've gone to an IWB & IWB/Tuck-In holster for my S&W 442 I rarely pocket carry anymore. When I do go for pocket carry I do it sans holster, as the Uncle Mikes' pocket holster I tried for a while kept coming out with the revolver.

Another vote for the DeSantis Nemesis and SuperFly. I have one for my wife's snubby revolver and another one for my P-64.

I love the SuperTuck also, for larger guns. I use it for my Taurus 24/7 Compact .45 but it bothers me that I can't have my hand on the grip when the hair is standing up, walking to my car in a parking lot late at night. I also need to disarm fairly regularly. Work, post office, any place that serves alcohol (even if it's a restaurant that serves beer). The pocket holster makes it a lot easier to quickly disarm and re-arm.

The way to draw with the Nemesis is to pull the whole thing backwards, then up. The tab sticking out beneath the trigger guard will catch on the pants.

Always use a holster to prevent negligent discharges.

#3 To keep the pistol positioned properly in my pocket.

Protecting the trigger is critical, but this item - maintaining a consistent orientation - has always been listed as a key reason for a pocket holster.

No, but when I pocket carry it's a S&W 638, so it's got a long, heavy-enough trigger (on purpose, mind you), and my pocket's clear of everything.

I carry my Ruger LCP in a DeSantis Nemesis Holster in my front pocket.

Keeps the lint and dust out of your action.

Covers your trigger for more safety.

Very thin - adds no bulk at all.

No reason not to use a holster.

Holster. I don't want a pistol shaped print and pistol edges tend to bust through the average pocket if you don't do some custom modifications.

Been front Trouser Pocket carrying my 1917 New Service Colt .45 Revolver ( 'Pocket Model' ) 'Snubby' lately.

It j-u-s-t fits...at least with these couple pairs of new Blue Denim work Pants.

I need to re-inforce the Pockets though, because if I don't, it will start to tear through after a while.

Seems ridiculous to me to try and have a Holster IN your Pocket, especially when there would be no room for one.

For a tiny little Gun, which would end up laying sideways or something, in a large enough Pocket, sure, some sort of Holster-ish thing to keep it vertical, maybe would make some sense.

The best is to find a good Seamstress, or do it yerself if skilled enough in Sewing, and have Strong re-inforced Pockets installed, if wishing to carry anything substantial in one's front Trouser Pocket.

Coat Pockets similarly, of course...

I pocket carry an LCP with a Desantis Superfly holster. I used to use a Nemesis, but the Superfly has an anti-print guard that's very helpful in preventing the weapon from being identifiable.
Honestly, I think you'd have to be crazy to carry *in any manner* without a holster that covers the trigger guard. I don't want any chance of that trigger snagging on anything.
Personally, I carried a cell phone in my strong side pocket for years before I started carrying my LCP there. Even after a couple years, when I go to make a phone call, sometimes my first instinct is to reach in my pocket. In the rare case that my hand actually makes it into my pocket before I realize what's actually there, I feel the holster and can't get to the trigger without first pulling the gun out of the holster. I have no worries that the holster will come out of my pocket when I draw, as I practice draw regularly and not even once have had the holster budge. The gripping sides of the holster keep it securely in my pocket unless I intentionally grab the holster.

I use a Mika pocket holster with my Kahr PM9.

Then it is not well designed. Too many holster makers seem to think a pocket holster has to retain the gun, therefore fit it tightly. There is no reason for this as your pocket does that. As well, many designs require that you pull up and back, thus snagging the holster on the edge of your pocket, or pressing it against your leg. These are awkward and unnatural motions, especially quickly and under stress. Mika's design suffers from none of these problems.

How could the Trigger 'snag' anything?

A Hammer Spurr can snag, yes...which is why one Bobs the Hammer, or has a Shrouded Hammer, and, also, why one has a Round Front Sight for Pocket Revolvers.

I can not imagine any condition where the Trigger would snag anything.

I shouldn't say 'snag', but there is a chance of you accidentally grabbing it, or even your pants bunching up if you bend the right way and bunching *into* the trigger guard. I remember a particular story about a man who managed to shoot himself in the groin this way using Smart Carry.

Well...maybe 'smart carry' was not so smart afterall.

Oye...

As one pleases...

If a person is too inept to manage drawing the Revolver without danger of actuating the Double Action Mechanism, my guess? They are too stupid to be carrying anything at all...and an in-pocket-holster is not going to make any difference in that situation of them pulling the Trigger through a Double Action cycle while or before Drawing the Revolver.

Not everyone is intelligent or co-ordinated enough to Carry responsibly.

This possibly sad simple fact, even in our liberal epoch where we are indoctrinated to insist that everyone is a winner, and everyone is the same, and everything MUST be the same for everyone, probably does need to be regarded in earnest pause now and then.

Right now, is just such a moment of pause, I recon...

One may read of instances where a person at the Dinner Table jabs themself in the Eye with a Fork, while guiding a Forkfull of Apple Pie to their mouth.

So, shall we indulge in heavy drama, about how NO ONE ought to ever handle a Fork, unless they have some sort of Harness or OSHA device, to prevent the mis-adventure?

If someone is too stupid or too inept to manage XYZ, God Bless them, but, I would say, they should find another way, and, avoid XYZ for their own and everyone else's sake.

Like that...

Idiots and their mis-adventures, are the measure of Idiots...they are not the measure of anyone or anything else.

Lol...

additional note about pocket carry

You must be sure that only the handgun and its holster are in the pocket you choose. Objects like keys, coins, pens, etc. can jam mechanisms or snag triggers.

A pocket holster will keep the gun in position for drawing and it will also protect your clothing from unnecessary wear/damage. Is there any reason not to use one?
