Pocket holster for cargo pockets

I often wear pants that have the big cargo pockets on them. Both of the guns that I carry fit easily in that cargo pocket. The trouble is that it is too loose a fit. I would like to be able to carry in that pocket at times. Is there a pocket holster that works well in those big pockets? Or does nobody like using those low on the thigh pockets? Access would not be difficult with velcro on the pocket flaps.

Cargo pocket carry would be super convenient if you find an adequate holster. But think about the biggest advantage of pocket carry, having a full firing grip in a situation where you may need a gun. That doesn't seem possible in a cargo pocket.

Pocket carry can be the fastest draw if your hand is on the gun. It can be the slowest if your hands are free. Cargo pocket carry seems to eliminate any advantage of pocket carry.

I like cargo shorts in the summertime for front pocket carry. The cargo pocket kind of breaks up the outline of the holstered gun.
I use an Alabama front pocket holster for my Ruger LC9s Pro.

Taking a long road trip, I will frequently move my holstered pistol from my front pocket to my cargo pocket. It's a little more comfortable while seated in a vehicle.
When stopping for gas, knowing I will go inside, I'll transfer it back to my front pocket.

The problem with carrying in a cargo pocket is... the gun wants to pendulum / bang into your leg, doorways, walls, everything around you.
Otherwise I use cargo pockets to carry my wallet and big cell phone.

Robert Mika makes a squared-off pocket holster for cargo pants. If your pockets are bigger than the norm, I am sure he could tailor a holster to fit your particular pocket.

Sticky-brand holsters fit very well and squarely in Dickies work-pants cargo pockets. The gun does still swing around and smack stuff occasionally, but it's manageable. For me, the cargo pockets are the only realistic option at work.

I checked his web site out. He shows a holster that looks like a good possibility. And they aren't very expensive at all. I'll just have to check dimensions against those of my cargo pockets.

Cargo pockets are just too low for me. And the Velcro flap slows things down. As said above, I want my hand on the gun if I pocket carry. If you really want to carry that way, see what you think of Crossbreed and if they can customize the backing.

I applaud you for recognizing that you need a quality pocket holster. I still question the ability to draw the gun with any reasonable speed.

Out of curiosity, what guns would you carry?

I wear 5.11 and Propper cargo pants and the Ruger LCP Max works great in front pocket with the DeSantis Superfly pocket holster.

I’ve been a fan of Recluse holsters for quite a while. They make cargo pants holsters, but I haven't tried them. I carry a Kahr P380, Kahr PM9, and a S&W J frame in Recluse in my front pocket and am very satisfied with them. I’ve been just as happy with them in my back pocket when I’ve tried that method.

Another option is acquire a bigger gun.

You know…. Just in case you have something you've wanted to try but needed a justification. I mean why buy a new holster when a new gun would do. Lol

I have the same problem with the LCP in big pockets and have never found a good solution. The PM45 fits nicely.

I realize the limitations of what I am wanting to do. It won't be my normal means of carry by any means. I am just looking for options. My two most often carried guns are a Sig P6 and a Taurus 605.

I have bigger guns that I carry occasionally and I carry them OWB in a Galco holster. I have a Sig P220 and P226. I'd never try to put them in a pocket.

Seems it would flop around on my leg too much for me, even if the holster was snug in the pocket unless the pants were awful snug... and I can't do snug pants, my job is too physically active for that, gotta be able to climb, crawl, bend, etc. (flatbed truck driver, not a pole dancer).

Especially with a heavier gun... seems better to keep it in places where it's snug to the body and more secure.

But... with all that said... modify the pants a bit and wear a drop leg holster under your pants, cut the backing out and use the cargo pocket for access.

Joking there... but ya know that might work lol.

I wear the Columbia PFG cotton cargo shorts quite a bit.
What I do is carry my other “stuff” in the cargo pocket, and utilize the “real” pocket for my Colt Agent.

I do use a pocket holster that aids in keeping the revolver more or less upright in my regular pocket.

Circumstances have led me into the wonderful world of cargo pants - Walmart quit carrying the Wrangler khakis I had counted on since J.C. Penney's closed and these were the best fitting. But the extra pockets are seldom much use, certainly not for a heavy lump like a hideout gun.

I have pocketed an old W. German P220 before, no joke. Big pockets and just loved the gun, it honestly wasn’t to bad, wasn’t to good either, lol.

The problems I have with the cargo pockets:

They're far away.
You can't casually reach into one.
It's weight swinging around even further from your hip.
There's a flap you have to undo.

What's wrong with carrying the gun in a front pocket like any other pants? You have two additional pockets you can store stuff in. Why not relocate the phone, keys, wallet, or money clip into a cargo pocket?

I was assuming we were talking about the front pocket, they’re normally huge on cargo pants.

I could have been mistaken, I’d never carry on in the knee pocket, well, maybe while driving/sitting. Seems like it’d be painful when you walk with a half pound of steel smacking you in the knee with every steep, but I’ve never tried it.

This got me to thinking, I normally carry a small pistol in the regular right front pocket, but it would be more accessible while seated in the cargo pocket. Might be worth shifting around for driving on the Wrong Side of the Tracks.

I've tried it. It works okay, but it's not faster than getting a pistol out of a console. Or from a holster screwed to the back of your console.

I sometimes carry my bug in thigh pocket of my Duluth Firehose Cargo pants. Getting to Iwb or front pocket when sitting in a car or on a machine with a seat belt is not ideal. I can reach into that cargo pocket much easier. I keep it in a velcro ankle holster folded into the cargo pocket and keep the retainer strap off. This keeps it upright and easily produced if needed.
Watching this thread with interest as I might try some of the suggestions.🙂
