Check out this crazy guy on Twitter:

But there’s more:

okay, ha ha. Yes, the Twitterer is….. me.

But that photo: it’s the one the news uses for any police departmanet announcement these days. It’s an officer standing next to a display gun collection.

They never specify WHAT the collection is. It’s not “Sample Confiscations and Forfeitures” because, well, check it out.

Could it be Authorized LEO Carry Collection?

I actually ran the property room for a hundred man agency in south Florida years ago - and I can tell you that the weapons seized for one reason or another ranged from absolute junk to an occasional really nice piece that I wouldn't have minded owning... If my experience was anything to go by a large agency just in an ordinary year would have so many guns in it's control that choosing this or that to display might have taken some time...

Weapons in custody ranged from those taken into control in domestic disturbances, actual weapons recovered in crimes held for evidence, and every other category from found weapons, to weapons that would eventually, if no owner was ever found, be converted to City use.. After two years running our property room as a newly promoted sergeant - I was more than ready to get back out on the street... Firearms held in police custody have always been a very sensitive topic - and any mis-handling of them would be a direct threat to any police chief's job...

The photo of a board of guns accompanies a story on the Gainesville FL "Black on Black Crime Task Force" staffing problems. "Black on Black violence interrupters" are the officers assigned to the task force.

I can image the news editor: "Hey we need a stock photo for 'Florida, police, crime' out of the archive."

I looked up and read the story. It's not about guns. It's about staffing issues for the task force.

John Henderson, "Gainesville considers ‘Black-on-Black violence interrupters’", The Gainesville Sun, Associated Press, 7 Sep 2021.

The photo and its caption are about "gun violence" but the article is on proactive measures to interrupt the cycle of retaliatory violence within the community.

Okay, so I don't use "Twitter" at all and I still don't understand what a cop standing next to a board displaying a handful of firearms has to do with "violence interrupters."

Not even gonna touch the concept of violence interruption.
That’s why I called the guns the “violence interrupters”

Great comment. I had no idea they USE confiscated guns. Crazy. Of course they use the heck out of the trucks and boats they seize, so I guess it makes sense

Local news ran a story on gun violence and used a pic of a confiscation from another story.
I got the news director on the phone and questioned his integrity.
He was not happy. Told him don't it again and I will be watching!
NICE!! But this city is kind of a lost cause
