Recently I have noticed quite a few different places offering Gen 2 and Gen 3 Glock 22 Police Trade in pistols. Also Sarco has some Sig 226 and 228R trades.

Anyone have any info on these pistols? I realize (especially on the .40 that the recoil springs may need to be swapped out) Kind of leaning towards a Sig, at the kind of price being offered. Would hope that these would be good shooters.

typically police trade in pistols have been well cared for, shot enough that they're plenty broken in, but not nearly enough to need any significant parts replaced.

Getting a new recoil spring for them isn't a bad idea, even if the spring on the gun you get turns out to have plenty of life left in it you'll have a spare handy.

Guns with rubber grips are likely to have their grips really, really chewed up by seatbelts, though. Not that it's hard or pricey to fix that.

I've had very good luck with LE trade-in pistols...I once spent an afternoon going through 50+ pistols in a shop looking for the best one....and they are usually a good value.

If you can't inspect them personally, I'd lean toward paying the extra for the ones in better condition. I'd change out all the springs on one just as preventive measure since you don't know when they were changed last.

The SIGs are nice. If they are really offering a 228R, that would be my choice...they never made that many of them as they are over run 228 slides on a 9mm 229R frame

I would not hesitate to buy the average LE trade in gun at the right price. Most probably see less than 500 rounds thru them a year. As far as the Gen 3 G 22 goes, I carried one as a duty weapon for 12 years with zero problems.

The Sarco Sigs are a mix of Israeli military surplus and Swiss police surplus (IIRC) and exhibit a good bit more finish wear (dings and scratches as well as holster wear) than your average LEO trade in. They have the standard 228, not the 228R.

***My information is about 4 or 5 weeks old from when I called them to try and order a 228, it is possible that they did get in some new 228Rs as they were out of 228s when I last spoke with them.

Yeah, I saw some pics of the Sarco 228s that got shipped out and wasn't very impressed. I decided that I'd need all new springs and roll pins and a good bit of cleaning work to get it up to par, and after buying the parts, shipping and transferring the gun, (not even counting my labor to swap everything out) I would almost break even with a slightly used commercial 228 bought FTF and wouldn't have to spend time working on a gun before I got to shoot it and would have a prettier looking gun overall.

I ended up going a different way though. I already have one 228...

I would jump on one, no hesitation. They were probably lightly used and were given a once-over. More than you will get from any other used gun.

I trust used Glocks in general. I'm not saying it's impossible to damage one, but you have to get creative.

Police Trade

Been doing a little more research. Summit has Swiss made 2340 with 2 mags for $335, picture looks nice if can be believed.

Kiesler Police Supply has Gen 3 Glock 17, 3 mags
and holster $359.

If both are in the same shape, which in your opinion would be a better buy.

I know Sig, Glock, 2 different guns. However I believe I will buy one or the other (Can not afford both) Any opinions? Appreciate your input.

Thanks much,

Gunner

I've had a couple LE trade-in guns.
A S&W 19 and a Glock 22 gen2.
Both had alot of holster wear. Other than that, they were both great. Accurate, functioning, quality, cheap guns. What more could you ask for?

picking up my trade in 6906 today, we'll see how she flys this weekend. it was from CA department of corrections so that may be a + as perhaps it saw less use..... and from the pictures looks to have been well cared for. will let you know

Of my handguns I have:

1 SIG P6 West German Police Trade-in
1 Walther P-1 West German Police Trade-in
1 CZ-82 Czech Police Trade-in
1 CZ-52 Czech Military Surplus
1 S&W Mod 64 Pittsburgh PD Trade-in
1 Nagant M1895 Russian Military surplus
1 Tokarev M57 Yugoslavian Military surplus

As you can tell, I buy a lot of surplus/trade-in guns :). Pretty sure they outnumber my other pistols. I've never had an issue out of any of them, and plan on buying plenty more as funds allow. Its an excellent way to get some guns at great prices.

I recently bought a Sig 220 police trade in. A little holster wear, dirty on the inside. Bore excellent, shoots great. I like it better than my Glocks.

I wouldn't be afraid to try a used police Sig or Glock tradein. I'm
sure most cops take care of their guns. That being said, I have a
very good friend that is perfectly capable of destroying an anvil.

Police Trade Sig

Took the plunge today. Ordered a Swiss made LEO trade-in Sig 2340. Hard shell case, and 2 hi-cap mags for $335 + SH. Was told this batch came out of Mass. State Police. So hopefully the armorers kept it up decently.

Should be able to pick up on Wednesday next week.

I just picked up a gen 2 Glock 22 from Aim Surplus last week.

It needed pretty much all of the internals replaced, but I had the parts on hand so it wasn't a big deal. The recoil spring was shot, did not pass the test. Came with a NY trigger spring, that went RIGHT into the trash. Put a 3.5 connector in it and polished it up. Has quite a bit of finish wear but I don't really care. This gun is going to get a grip chop to g27 size anyway.
