I have found a polish tantal (ak-74 clone) in 5.45x39, for $520. Comes with two mags and bipod. I have found the same rifles on a few different sites and the price is way over 520. My thinking is that 5.45 is not only a cool round, but it is WAYYY cheaper right now, than any other caliber i own. Plus i love russian weapons. Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with these rifles?

don't have one, but hav fired one. this is one of the best ak type variants out there; a top 5 really. plus they are nicely accurate. 520 is downright cheap for it as well.

First you need to find out who built this Tantal. A lot of Tantals built by Century International Arms where made with a 5.56 barrel, and so the bullets keyhole and lose accuracy. If this is the case, $520 is about $500 too much. If this is not a CIA build, then this is a super buy. I have a Tantal and they are great AKs and a lot of fun to shoot.

The Tantals are made in the USA, using recievers and barrels made in the USA with Polish AK74 parts kits.

All the Tantals do not have chrome lined barrels, so if you are using surplus 5.45x39mm ammo be dilligent in your cleaning. Because some of the surplus 5.45x39mm ammo on the market is corrosive.

If it's a CAI (Century Arms) I'd skip it, even at $520. Too many problems with keyholing and the one I had was about as straight as a broken arrow; rear sight block, gas block, and front sight all crooked, nasty rivet job too.

If it's an Interarms with orginal barrel jump on it OR if you just want a `74, I think it was Classic Arms that had Bulgarians with orginal barrels for $650.

Shot a century tantal that would keyhole every time at 10yds with silver bear ammo and when we switched to the spam can surplus it shot perfect at 100yds.

The twist rate was wrong for the heavier silver bear bullets.
