wickedsprint you are absolutely correct about the port confusion.
 
Believe the significant difference between the two ports is that Fort Lauderdale port is also a petroleum off-loading and storage site with daily fuel trucks coming and going and all of that area is accessible once you enter the port facility (whether for commercial or passenger activiites....).

I'm going to be working a night charter near Port of Miami tomorrow night so I'll make a point of looking if I'm in the area. I know there's big petroleum tanks near there -but not certain whether they're separate from the passenger facility or not. I've been running my small skiff in that area for many years and never thought to look at that angle. I know how Ft. Lauderdale is set up and how they have their security entrance quite a ways from the various facilities (unlike Port of Miami which is a lot smaller in actual area on Dodge island.
