or a CA sheriff handing out CCWs to his buddies only

Permits here are issued through the county court, and are not discretionary, in spite of what you guys may think about NY style gun laws. The judges drag their heels much longer than they are authorized to, but unless you have a disqualifier based on criminal record or other character issues, you WILL be issued a permit. Depending on your county of residence, it may have that stupid overstamp for hunting and target practice only, but NYS law doesn't recognize the overstamp...according to state law, there are only two types of permits..residential and concealed carry. Its the more liberal judges that have been pushing the overstamp issue.

If I WAS issuing permits, I think I would be pretty lenient in issuing them, in accordance with the regulations that I have mentioned in threads before in regards to what i think should be the guidelines for issuing such permits.

I have no desire to run for political office. I detest being stuck inside the office, as I was during my recent light duty stint, and enjoy being out and about answering calls. The Sheriff does a lot of going from one meeting to another. As long as I am able to get my .02 in with him when I feel the need, I am ok with that and being where I am in the food chain.

If I WAS going to assume a position of being the head of an agency, I would rather do it at the part time village agency I work for. Its more laid back than TCSD.

I suspect your desire for aggressive cops would quickly diminish if YOU were to be wrongly treated "aggressively" by the police

No doubt. And the operative word there is "wrongly". I have had some encounters with the 'boys in blue', some positive, and some (when I was much younger) negative, which I brought on myself.

Cops on the street are a deterrent to crime. If criminals know the cops are hamstrung by the threat of lawsuits, criminals will be more brazen, dangerous and harder to arrest.

My biggest complaint with law enforcement is the failure to respond and act when given information regarding crime(s) and the whereabouts of criminals. I most recently had this experience after having located a felon wanted in 48 states with an arrest on sight warrant from MO.

I really don't think there is any evidence to indicate most cops go around hassling Joe Citizen for grins and giggles. It is an anomaly rather than SOP.

I want aggressive cops only when we the people authorize them to be aggressive. The reason crime rates have soared is due to the fact that the public has been weakened in policing itself, and this has created a divide between the LE community and the public. The cops get stronger as the publics role in policing grows weaker.

"Cops on the street are a deterrent to crime."

That's the thing. The public should be a bigger threat because there are more of us. Why is it that the Police are a greater threat to crime?

Theo :)

Cops on the street are zero deterrent. They are a reactionary force. Call 911 and call for a pizza, which gets there first?

Similar to the thoughts of others here, police need to be held to a higher standard. If you want to enforce the law you better be squeaky clean. Otherwise they are just a big gang of blue bullies. It can't be THAT to detect and prevent officer candidates who have a power-trip mentality can it?

You mean when you have the Chief of Police saying that people should just be passive when they are confronted with a robber or a carjacker or a rapist. And are also the ones that would not issue CCW permits?

Yes, that's it. I actually had an ex-chief of police instruct the women in a class I was taking to just go along with their attacker, and this ex-chief of police is a woman. Believe it or not!

If I was in that class, I would have volunteered to role-play the role of the attacker. At the very least, I get to cop a feel... or is that feel a cop, at least an ex-cop.

I've been contacted by one local and one national talk radio show host (yes, you know his name, one libertarian, one conservative) about this.

They both read the thread over at GT. Both expressed disgust at some of the cowardly attitudes of LEOs there.
