Spelling counts. So does grammar. We’re all human and subject to typos, but when you can’t write at a third grade level, it looks bad to the antis that read this board. Here's a little third grade level primer for posting on gun boards (see, it's gun related! :D)

There: A location. "It's over there.
They're: A contraction of they are. "They're blue and green."
Their: Possessive. "It's their car."

It's: A contraction of it is. "It's great that we have a place like THR."
Its: Possessive. “It lives in its own world.â€

Your: Possessive. Your car is really fast.
You’re: A contraction of you are. “You’re a really good shot.

These are some of the more abused homonyms, certainly not a list to end all lists.

LOOSER!!!

Er, LOSER. The misuse of the word above really grates. I am also no fan of the redundant, and spreading, "at that point in time." Time is already implicitly broken down into discrete units so it is entirely sufficient to say, "at that point," or "at the time" rather than get all stupid over it.

Irregardless, remember that the word at the beginning of this sentence does not exist. Choose either irrespective, or simply use regardless.

Thus endeth the lesson. I do not care so much about getting the spelling wrong, as that is, like as not, the byproduct of typing. However, not even getting in the ballpark on correct word usage or sentence structure is an embarrassment to the community.

I assumed that the "grammer" [sic] was ironical. :D

Some bad grammar tends to grate on me a bit, too, but I'm also guilty of strange typos involving trnanposed and mssing letters in words. I also tend to annoy myself with my own writing and go back and change it later.

Since we've got our BVD's in a wad, how 'bout us complaining about fat fingers, double words, and my personal favorites. . . . . no punctuation or capitalization.

THR ain't an English major dream but it is a huge improvement over virtually any other board I visit. And that is a complement (?sp) directed at its participants.

Marko, it woodunt bee won uv mi threds if their wazent sum sarkasim throne inn there. I was wondering how long it would go before someone mentioned it.

That's the truth.

Eye strike a key and type a word
And weight four it two say

Its rare lea ever wrong.

Eye have run this poem threw it

Its letter perfect awl the weigh
My chequer tolled me sew.

For the love of GOD...

and all that is holy...

Thanks, Boats, for clearing up "irregardless". Call me fussy, anal-retentive, etc., but man that one slays me.

My wonderful boyfriend can't spell to save his life. As a journalism major, crap like that is worse than fingernails on a chalkboard!

Other peeves (yes, I know I need medication)

Alot: It's a lot! Two words, by George!
Improper apostrophes...I'd almost rather go to a rat-infested wok joint than a restaurant that was called "Mikes Potsticker's".

Okay, I'm done now.

I completely understand your frustration, as grammatical errors are a peeve of mine as well. However, to chastise folks who come here to share, learn and relax just isn't kosher.

Though I share your personal penchant and desire for a flawless gun-owner image, most folks just won't feel comfortable posting if they know their posts will be scrutinized for spelling, grammar or syntax errors.

Concerning image, who cares what the anti-gun sheeple think? They don't subscribe to logic, so it's doubtful their personal opinions of us will alter their political stances.

Yes folks, please proofread your posts... just don't sweat over it.

Slow Day?

No one has a new firearm or similiarly related topic to discuss, we are down to a treatise on Grammar.

Given that some of us may not have english as a first or even second language, I say that those posting on this board do a good job of interacting with others, even with typo's and being overly verbose and wordy.

But, hey!! what do I know.

Snowdog, we're talking a level that doesn't need scrutinzing.

Oh yeah, that "irregardless" thing irks my wife like no other. Talk about "A whole nother" thing? :D

And where is the gun-related topic of this thread?

No kiddin(SP?). I read posts for content. Its those perfectly indented 9 paragraph long posts that say absolutely nothing that I tune out and skip over right away. Some people just type crap to show off their there they re writing skills but really dont have anything to say.

I took English1. It was a joke and a waste of my time. I would rather read a few mispelled lines of true knowledge and experience than an essay of B.S.

LMAO!

RE: Back on topic;

"This is my rifel thisis my gunn,
one is fer killin', won is 4 fun!"

Apologies to R. Lee Ermy(sp?): "Full Metal Jacket":neener:

Why do we have to choose?

Better yourself so your "true knowledge" can be effectively communicated to the rest of the english speaking world.

Love the comic, TheeBadOne! :D Misuse of the apostrophe is one of my biggest punctuation-related pet peeves. And so many people make those mistakes that I'm tempted to blow the comic up to poster size and post it hither and yon, everywhere I can think of... yes, even at the local college....

I agree, but does this mean that we should also stop wearing plaid shirts, suspenders and go on a diet? Oh yes, please, go to the dentist.

I teach college courses. Some students, 5% at some schools, closer to 20% at others, cannot write clearly enough to be understood by others. About 1% cannot speak clearly enough to be comprehended by any of their listeners!

Some people are better at one form of communication than another. I can usually express myself coherently in writing, but in person it depends on some other factors. If I'm put on the spot or under pressure (under the gun? :D ) I have a tendency to lose my verbal skills.

Oleg...

do you correct their work, or just let them muddle through life???

Back in the "olden" days when I went to school, most all the teachers and many profs at college would correct errors
