Posting on gun boards... Spelling and Grammer count!

In my experience of debating antis, I have come to find that there is no winning, even when you do win. If you make spelling or grammatical errors, they will jump all over them, calling you "illiterate."
If you write a well-reasoned piece that has no gramatical or spelling errors, they will accuse you of trying to appear superior. Never mind that it is a fact that your spelling and grammar may indeed be superior to theirs; they think it's a form of bigotry.

In short, most antis are not rational, reasonable people, and there is no sense in wasting time on them.

FWIW, first impressions are important, and so it's best to try and watch spelling and grammar as much as possible. However, the bottom line is still the logic, and I'd rather see a poorly executed logical piece than a perfectly written piece of illogical nonsense.

Uf korse, i cood speel lyke this hyar an thay"d prolly cawl me uh dum rednaik. Thu funni thang iz, hits reely hard two delibratlee missspeel and yewse orwfurl gramer whin yew has beed edumukated proply. Hits dun tuk me 5 minits tew write this hyar pagaraf!

Too bad you feel that way, because these people that you speak of vote and make laws.

However, the bottom line is still the logic, and I'd rather see a poorly executed logical piece than a perfectly written piece of illogical nonsense.
Again, why should we have to choose? If we're so brilliant because we know what's "right," why aren't we brilliant enough to put together a comprehensive sentence?

As one that often butchers the English language, I can identify with the topic of this thread.

I respectfully ask one thing.

Some of us dislike public correction, or better described as “public humiliation.â€

I’m not a violent person. The closest I’ve been to actually wanting to hurt someone was because of a “public humiliation†event at a local grocery store several years ago. I’ve since throttled my temper on this topic. It’s not worth getting arrested over.

So please keep it private in an e-mail. I’ve been corrected a couple of times via e-mail. I still respect those fellow members for keeping it between us.

I'm aware of that, and I'm also aware that a vast number of illogical and unreasonable laws have been passed as a result of people like that being elected and being able to vote.

It is illogical and unreasonable to use logic and reason in trying to convince an illogical and unreasonable person of their mistakes. If they were logical and reasonable, either they wouldn't make those illogical choices, or they would undo them once the flaw was pointed out to them.

There's a difference between "knowing" something because one believes it is right and knowing something because it IS right. They believe their anti-gun arguments are right; I don't believe my pro-gun arguments are right; I KNOW they are right. But that doesn't change the antis minds, so....waste time arguing, knowing that even if you are correct, it won't have any effect, or spend the time more profitably.

Back to grammar; doncha just love the English language?
He effected an entry by affecting a disguise. Once inside, he rewrote the special effects program which affected the program adversely.

We all make mistakes, but...

It's worth the effort to try to write so that you can be understood.

Posts like this look like they were written by semi-literate ten-year-olds:

Have you ever seen leathel wep 4?
did you see all the anti NRA posters. like in the offices.
I used to love that series. now i put my DVD's in the clay launcher.
What is that about. Here they shoot everything that moves but the makers are ANTI's.
Anyone else see these signs in the movie?
thatnks for reminding me about that guys
next time im cruising for a good movie DVD, ill remember not to pick out either of those
it IS hypocritical to make the heroes gunslingers in every sense of the word and opposse citizen ownership of guns
"look kids, do as i say not as i do"
(I'm not picking on anyone, but those are great examples.)

So I offer the following modest advice:

* Sentences usually start with a capital letter and end with a period, question mark or exclamation point.

* Use paragraph breaks! A huge block of solid text is unlikely to be read.

* Spell checkers -- even free ones (http://www.spellcheck.net/) -- abound. If spelling is a problem for you, use one!

* Have enough respect for your own ideas to take the time to express them intelligibly.

They say clothes make the man. The online equivalent is "Language makes the poster."

Dress well.

Appearances, speech and other superficial characteristics affect the welcome given to a person and his idea. For example, which of the two men shown in the photo is a bad guy, which one is a good guy? How did you make that determination?

I suspect photographic tomfoolery here - aren't they the same guy?

The answer is obvious: The guy in plaid is holding his gat in the one-handed, sideways gangsta style, so he is the perp. :)

The answer is

Both of them are...

Cops. They are acting for the camera. I doubt that many of us interpreted the picture as an "ambushed citizen defending himself against suit-wearing government or freelance aggressor". Looks, and spelling, and other matters like that do matter, unfortunately.

Mpayne,

You are also equating better training with goodness. So would a well-trained federal thug with an All-American M16 would be doubleplusgood compared to an undertrained civilian with a Mak90 or a pump shotgun?

(Snicker. The county where no donut is safe!)

I was joking about the plaid guy's gun handling skills, but seriously, Oleg...

There is a minimum level of competence which implies that a person takes his enterprise seriously.

With shall-issue being brand new in Minnesota, some folks on the Star Tribune's BBS wondered how they could tell a bad guy from a good guy in a convenience store, were they to spot a gun.

I replied that it's easy: The good guy owns a holster.

Obviously, no rule is universal.

My point was that you can determine a lot about someone's intent by how responsibly they act.

I have to agree with Mpayne on this.

There are some posts that are so convoluted that they make no sense.
I try to read them but often just ignore the rest and go to the next post that I can read.

What I wonder is how many people will read the examples Mpayne used and not see what's wrong with them.

We have had several threads, recently, where people had made judgements on a person's character based on how they were dressed and/or things they said.

We have also had some where some were critiqued as to their knowledge.

We are all co-existing in this wonderful cyber-world Oleg and his Moderators have created for us. Since this is a written word and not an audio-visual world all we really have to judge each other by is our words.

Right or wrong I tend to hold more creedence in those who can express themselves on a higher level.

Now I am not a great speller, my grammar skills are not perfect. But I try.
I am one of the worst typists on the planet. My backspace key is the most used key on my keyboard. I don't think any of us are worried by the occasional slip of the finger. My M & N keys are constantly changing places as are my I & O keys.

I do, however, reread my posts before I click on the Submit button.

I am here to learn and to share. I hope that's why we are all here. It's a shame that some very valid opinions and untapped knowledge is being bypassed because of poor communication skills.

I have said for years that "Knowledge is like Love. It's useless to have it if you can't share it with someone else."

Unfortunately, illiteracy is running rampant through our society. For example, today I was sitting in the auditoium at school, when I noticed a fellow student's jacket. The logo on the back read: "ROCAWEAR It's not where your from It's what you roc." Now, the use of the word roc is understandable, because it's the name of the brand. However, the use of the word your, when you're was the proper word to use, really irks me.
