I am fairly new to reloading (I know, what a time to start) and I wanted to prepare to reload .270 Win for hunting rounds if needed, but powder has been a problem, of course. I went to local shop, after not being able to find anything online, and they helped me try to find something they had in stock that would work for the .270 Win w/130gr. He finally found something in an 2016 version of Lyman's book showing Winchester 244. By that time, we had been searching a while, so I didn't double check him and just bought it. I can not find any load data for W-244 on the .270 Win. Does anyone happen to know if this powder will work or a lead on powder that will? I will be loading some .45 ACP, so I can use this powder, but I don't have a powder for the .270. I have already seen discussions that W-748 (for my 223) is too fast for the .270, and W-296 (only powder I could get that had load data for 250LGD) does not have anything for .270 either. Only other stuff I have is Universal and Tight Group. Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Hard to say what to get when we don’t know what they have. Win. 760 would do the trick. I have never been a fan of Winchester rifle powders. However my brother uses it in some cartridges. H 4831 or IMR 4831 would work well. Loading data is similar, but not the same, so be careful. Accurate, IMR , or H 4350 can all be used . Once again look carefully at the data. I use IMR 4064 for some 30/06 loads. However it is a bit fast burning for top velocity and loading density. There may some info available for the 270.There are several others powders that would be acceptable. All the powder manufacturers have online data. Look at their info, make a list, and see what they have in stock.

That's a typo, or speako, or something. W244 is a medium pistol powder, entirely unsuitable for magnum rifle cartridges.

Universal and TiteGroup are no use either. . . I'm sorry, but it sounds like you're out of luck.

Ya, we went through all the usual suspects and they didn't have any of them in stock. I don't know what he saw that he thought this would work, but he had to of misread it.

Yup, I am afraid I am. I have a decent stock of boxed ammo, just wanted to be prepared. I guess I'll just keep looking at stock and maybe I'll get lucky. Thanks.

Hodgdon's web site did show IMR-4064 available a week or so go. You might be able to buy it directly from the maufacturer. Let us know what major city you are near and maybe one of the members can direct you to powder. You can also check ARMSLIST classified for powder near you.

Thank you, I will keep watch.
I'm the the Dallas/FtWorth area, Texas.

I have had great results with Varget, but it is unobtainable as well. I am going to try 6.5 StaBall soon. I have 12 pounds of that so I hope it works well.

I have seen some people talking about using 6.5 StaBall and seem to like it fine in the .270. I have heard it works well in various and humid temp/climates, if you are in FL that might be a good ticket. I found an expensive 8# available of that, but I was not looking to load that many, especially for the price. Beggars can't be choosers, i guess. Thanks for the input.

Hodgdon's website has H 4350 for sale at $38.99 per pound and it should work good. I don't know if they have a minimum order or what the hazardous material charge is per order. You can put it in your cart and follow it through to see the total cost per pound before you place the order. Hopefully they can ship to your State.

I would go to Alliants, Hodgdons and Western (Accurate and Ramshot) web sites and make a list of powders they show for .270 with your bullet weight.
(Vectan, VihtaVouri and Shooters world might be worth checking as well)
Make a list of what will work and go from there. (guessing about 20 flavors on the list)
I don't load .270 and I am sure there are goto powders for it if you have the list you will know what there is load data for and can be used even if it may not be the "best" choice.
(that will prevent bad advice like you got on the W244)

W244 is a medium speed pistol powder, will work your .45.

Ya, I have bought from this place before and previous guy was really helpful, this time not so much. Oh well, I can still use it in my 45. I was finally able to find some Magpul for not too much overpriced, so I am set for now. Thanks for the info everyone!

Magpro, not Magpul.... Not sure what that says about me when autocorrect suggests Magpul, but I'm ok with it.

Ok so I reload 270 Winchester and I can say for a fact, Win244 is not for 270! My two reloading manuals only list one Winchester specific powder for 270 and it is Win760. I also use Accurate 2700 as it's very similar, some even say damn near the same as Win760.

OP -

My go to 270 powders are IMR 4064, IMR 4895 and Alliant Power Pro 4000 MR.

But really, it is suggested that you familiarize yourself with smokeless powders and their applications. Here are some load data websites to assist you:
