Anyone tried varget with a 150 gr bullet in 270 win? I have lots of varget and trying to find a load for my 270 savage. The local scheels has a bunch of different powders instock but at $35 to $45 per pound I don't want to buy a bunch to try.

Hard to beat 4831 but I also wondered about varget I have some 145 eldx I would like to load

When you have ... Lots Of Varget ... then lets work up some Varget Loads , lets see ,
270 Win and 150 gr. bullets ... Dang ! Just checked my three newest reloading manuals and come up empty !
Not one manual shows any loads with Varget and 150 gr. bullet .

Hodgdon Reloading Center has one load for a 140 gr. bullet , but no loads for any 150 gr. bullets...
This is strange ... there must be some data for 270 Win. / 150 gr.bullet / Varget somewhere ...
Sorry I can't find it , but I tried !
Gary

I've been playing with the 145 grn. ELD-X in ,270 Winchester for 2 years and finally got it to perform the way it does in a creedmoor. Creedmoor rifles barrels, by the way, are built to handle all copper or high copper bullets compared to older guns. My best load in a 2012 Win. Mod. 70 in .270 Win. is a Win. LRP in a Winchester case, loaded with 51 grains of IMR 4350 having the case trimmed back to 2.530 and seating the 145 grain ELD-X at 3.312. This produces consistent sub moa groups at a 100 yards or better. I was getting sticky bolt ejection when loading just over 52 grains. 51 grains of 4350 will yield almost 2800 fps. Varget isn't listed for 140/150 grain bullets. I suspect the reason is because high alloy copper type bullets, like the ELD-X have substantially more rifling contact due to their length, so they will produce a lot more pressure than conventional lead bullets.

IMHO too Varget is too fast for the .270 Winchester. Will it go bang, yes. Will it give you consistent accurate and speed, probably not. If the experts that test powders for various cartridges in Reloading Manuals do not find proper load, pass.

You would likely end up w 250 Savage performance, just wastes a lot of powder to get there. I believe a more correct powder would still be cheaper @ a higher performance level.

Don’t overlook Norma and VV

Yup, just about anything from 120-150 could maybe be used. Obviously some powders work better than others, but it will get you in the ball park.
I personally really am liking N555, and while not on that list, probably falls right about H4831ish.

I bought a few pounds of Norma 203b to fill in for Varget and several of the 204 to fill in for 4831 when powder was hard to find. They both fill the niche well...
I don't even think Norma is sold stateside anymore. I was going to give 203b a spin, and it's gone.

When I resumed loading for rifles a couple years back, was scrounging for components and was in Full Circle reloading in St. Charles, MO. Told the guy what I was up to and for the 308 win he handed me a bottle of Varget and IMR 4064 and a box of 165 grain Interlocks and told me I was good to go. For the 270 Win, it was a bottle of IMR 4350 and a bottle of H4831sc, and 130 gr Interlocks. He was right on both accounts.

But as to the 270, after trying several bullet and powder combinations.......and getting 1 1/2 to 2 inch groups.......one day this showed up:

That was 55.0 grains IMR 4350 under the 130 grain Interlock......and cooking along at close to 3,000 fps or more. Problem solved.

The other load that was close on accuracy and high velocity level was about 58 grains of H4831. As it turns out, the wheel was invented years ago. With some of these calibers, there are loads that seem to pass the test of time.

This was my father's load from nearly 50 years ago......same rifle. Found that in the stash........after I got to 58 grains on my own.

Yep, I've always been told to shoot the bullet the gun was made for and a 130 grain Interlock or Cor-Lokt have taken a lot of deer with your load.
My son, however, has BC on his brain since reading an article on deer hunting. I can run circles around the ELD-X under 200 yards, but he thinks the ELD is a magic bullet or something like that.
The photo is siting in his .270 Win. rifle 4 years ago with 130 grain Interlocks over 58 grains of 4831 using Fed Match LRP. The target is 1 inch squares at 100 yards at 1-2 inches high. He was trying to correct for windage at the time.
