I am beginning my journey to becoming a really good shot. I know I have the natural aptitude, I just lots of need practice with the right tools.

I just got my K31.

But I do not have a .22 rifle. My dad and I share one, but it stays at his house 3 hours away while I am at college.

I am interested in a CZ 513 or 452. Whichever one I can get in a trade.

Question is, are these rifles with decent high-velocity ammo accurate out to 100 yards?

You'll have to try really hard to get anyone to say anything bad about the CZ452. I posted a thread not too long ago for just that purpose. I think the worst thing was that on some folks' guns the bolts start out a little stiff.

My CZ 452 shoots better than I do at 100 yards. Easily under 2", and I'm not a particularly good shot. I bet some folks can get MOA or better.

If you're thinking about a 452, get one. You won't regret it.

+1

I received a 452 Lux as a gift and had never heard of them.

I've sold a lot since at the range.

For $14 you can get a great trigger on them: www.cz452.com

Mine shoots 1MOA with Wolf Match Target.

For the money, the CZ-452 line is probably the best there is. The quality is high and so is the preformance. These are all wood and machined steel guns like they used to be made. You won't find much plastic or stamped steel on these fine rifles and they tend to shoot very well. It could be the last bolt action .22lr you will ever need to buy in your or your son's lifetime.

What's the saying?

"Damning with faint praise, and praising with faint damns..."

High velocity ammo is not needed for accuracy purposes. Most if not all target ammo is standard velocity.

+100

.22s ALL seem to be finicky about ammo, some more than others. Just try a bunch of different kinds...But, as a general rule high velocity won't be as accurate....My buddy and I have spent the last several months trying everything we can get our hands on, and testing in a variety of .22s. In all cases 38-40 grn. standard velocity were some of the best performers. The 3 best overall were:

Federal Classic Gold
Winchester T-22 (better)
Wolf Target Match (best)

But very little difference between these 3...Just suggest that you might try these for starters, your gun may want something entirely different....

Best out of my 452 is PMC Moderators.

Not to mention with that ammo, it is quieter than a pellet gun. Even if I could, there would be no point in putting a supressor on that thing.

The only thing I don't like about the CZ's in general is the rather rough bolt action. I know they shoot very well as a rule. But, I'll stick with my Remington 541S. All of the Rem 541 22 rifles are very good.

But, as a general rule high velocity won't be as accurate

There are three reasons for that.

The first reason is that when high velocity projectiles drop below the speed of sound they may be disturbed.

Second, there is a dramatic reduction in velocity -- so a high speed round loses more velocity over 100 yards than a standard velocity bullet. Wind drift is a function of the flight time in a vaccuum compared to actual flight time -- so high velocity drifts more in the wind.

Finally, the first two reasons are why serious target shooters stick with standard velocity -- so manufacturers make very precise standard velocity target ammo. Much high velocity is made for price point, not precision.

My son has a CZ452 and it's a wonderful little tack driver. Very accurate and a lot of fun to shoot.

I LOVE my 452!

At 100 yards with Eley Sport (in purple box, hard to find, new stuff, recommended to me by little old guy who goes around the world teaching the body guards of world leaders...) I have, without fail, fired MULTIPLE 10-rd strings into a hole that can be completely covered by a NICKLE! Subtract the .22 diameter of the bullet and you get about .28 inches, center-to-center!!!

Repeat for emphasis: 10 rounds at 100 yards into a nickle, every time. :what: (barrel clean and cold)

I don't think you can get a better gun for FOUR times the money.;) IMHBTAO*

*In My Humble But Totally Acurate Opinion:D
