I am pricing a XD currently and my local shop has them at 600.00 for all black. They also have the new EMP for 1150.00 and Glocks at 650.00. Seems a bit steep considering the XD per the SA site has the msrp at 573.00. Is this shop overpriced or about average? I am in N. Calif BTW.

Thanks

I bought a new XD9 Tactical in December for $449 at the Houston gun show. Even the big retailers are only around $499-525 here.

Unfortunately (for consumers) California shops can get a lot more.

I bought an xd in .45 acp at gander mountain for $560. After looking around now I realize I could have gotten a better price but $600 is too much.

"Price Gouging" doesn't exist. Period. Like the Easter Bunny (sort of a Marxist Bunny if you will).

Yes, those guys are pricing the pistols above what the market in much of the rest of the country is pricing them at. But that isn't "gouging" its either pricing them as high as the local market will bear, or its stupidity and a lack of business savvy.

They are doing this either because they offer something that nobody else does (maybe some sort of additional service or they are in a closed market ... likely closed by draconian gun laws y'all have out there in CA), or they are idiots.

Considering the fact that you can order these guns online and have them shipped to their competition I'd say idiots.

I disagree, some dealers are gouging!

overpriced!

xd's shouln't be over 5oo, 45o is a good deal.
glocks shouldn't be over 550, with 9mm and .40's going for 5oo for a good deal. this is in so. cal btw.
i do quite a bit of traveling, and have noticed that prices are higher in central and northern california, but what about gun shows up north, like in san francisco?

Where is a good place to order an XD 45acp from?

You're only overcharged if you pay. Not if you just look and walk away.:)

Supply and demand. They have the supply and can demand what they like for it. As was said, the option to take it or leave it is yours, and what the local market will bear determines where the roof is.

The points about where a shop is located and what the local market conditions are were well taken. Less competition generally does mean higher prices where demand for that item is strong. It's highly unlikely that any local dealer would be willing to order an item for you if doing so would undercut the price of an identical item he has in-stock. Around here, the dealers generally have certain suppliers with whom they are established for credit/ordering/shipping purposes and will balk at ordering from someone else. They will usually only do so if all costs are paid cash-in-advance. There will generally be an extra charge or charges for their time and effort, even if very little of either is involved. IMO, it's not really reasonable to expect a dealer to order an item for you, from a source they don't normally deal with and use their money to do it for you. Especially if you're not a regular customer with an established track record for not reneging on a deal.

I just looked up the current dealer prices. I can still buy a few models in 9mm when they come back in stock. I could not sell them at 450.00, not even to a friend or relative. If I had some in my inventory and paid the old price for them I might.

In other words the 450.00 price is outdated already.:cuss:

It's only gouging if you're a captive audience.

Charging people in a cut-off post-disaster area $20 for a small water bottle is gouging, and tends to get the seller rolled by an angry crowd.

Overcharging for a gun in a shop, well, you have a car, and there's new thing called an internet to compare prices with... :)

I bought my Glock 22 for $500 dollars before tax at sportsmans warehouse and when cabelas opened i saw that they were selling Glock 22's for 650 before tax.
I couldnt believe that they were selling them for $150 dollars more for the same gun.

A thing is worth what a willing buyer will offer and a willing seller will accept. If you buy a gun (and no one is forcing you to buy it), then you and the seller have just agreed it is worth what you paid for it.

Ditto.

A lot of pricing depends on your location and how much competition there is there. If you want to see really horrible prices, try El Paso. There is very little competition here so most everything sells at or above suggested retail price. This despite the fact that we have one of the lowest pay scales in the nation. I've always wondered why a gun dealer would rather have an overpriced gun sitting in inventory for a year until he finds a sucker, rather than sell it at a price closer to the national average and reinvest that money in another gun to sell, and another and another. To earn that extra $200 or whatever, they miss out on probably $1,000 or more.

I paid $429 for a Dark Earth XD45 4" Service model brand new in the box with the gear, TODAY!

Cabela's.

$600 for any new in box XD outside a custom shop model is gouging.

Gunstore prices here on 4" XDs are $475 - $500.

Bud's Gunshop in KY sells them online for around $430 (currently sold out of 9mm's).

Look around at other shops or find an FFL holder and buy one on-line.

I'd say you were looking at a dealer with lousy prices. As I'm also in NorCal I know of several with these insane prices. I also know of a few with decent prices, so it's all on the shopper to compare.

I just bought a Glock (34) over the holidays and paid $529.00 for it but also saw the same gun in another shop for $649.00. :what:

And if you don't pay the $600, you won't be gouged. And the man who does pay it agrees willy-nilly with the seller that's a fair price.
