primer question

I've used LRM with BL-C(2) in .375H&H, and I'm not sure it mattered. I never considered it in .30-06.

But, in the interest of reducing the number of preventable "do I need a magnum primer?" questions in the universe, GO DO YOUR OWN EXPERIMENT. Report back with 2, 20 shot groups on target and then we'll know.

There is or can be more energy in a magnum primer, maybe. Maybe not. There are brands that don't specify magnum or standard but mag primers have thicker materials to prevent punctures and pressure failures. I only use magnum primers if available . work up all my loads with them but I use a lot of hard to ignite powders. Some say better accuracy with standard primers, I can shoot 2 groups with same load and mag or standard primers, if there's a difference I can't shoot accurately enough to see it. Some say higher velocity or sd, maybe or it maybe difference from one round to the next. IMO magnum primers can be substituted for standard but standard should not be substituted for magnums.

Cci have harder cups on average from my observations and chatter I hear. If you cannot get 450s then 41s will also work. Mag primers are all that's on the shelf at my bps.

I also have swapped all my primers to magnum type. The only ones that are not are for a couple striker fired pistols that need standard primers to fire every time. Otherwise I use small rifle magnum for all small or for the large size LRM or LPM exclusively. I did work up my loads using them though. Still I can't tell if there is a difference as the targets look the same as standard primers did when used. YMMV

I have a large stock of sr primers and not one single cartridge that uses them. I've taken to using them in place of smp and haven't had an issue with h110 but I haven't tested it in the cold - but I will.
Simplicity is a great thing, I'm having trouble finding smp locally but everything else is no problem.

i also use mag primers for all my rifle and pistol loads. i did tests and found with my 357 mag rifle load i get 19 fps more with the mag primer over the standard primer using the same bullet weight and powder drop.

would I absolutely need a magnum primer for blc2 in 6.5 grendel since there is such a small amount of powder used in a small case?

As someone mentioned... maybe do a simple workup with a small sample. H335 is another of those ball powders some recommend a magnum primer for, so I did an informal test in 5.56mm with my 20" AR H-Bar. Although magnum primers are recommended, I got better SD's and more velocity (marginally, but a statistical improvement...) with standard primers. I did not accuracy test these, it was just a test to see if ignition was wonky without a magnum primer. Both were CCI primers, if that makes any difference.
