I bought a used but apparently not fired much Winchester 1300 Defender a while back. I haven't disassembled it, but just cleaned what I could get to with it together. I took it shooting once, and put maybe 30 rounds through it with no problems. I was checking out a few things on it, as I got the Awerbuck video on the loaner program. I've found that it would routinely not grab a shell from the magazine, so I'd rack the slide and not chamber a round. Upon racking again, it'd dump the round out of the bottom. I didn't short stroke, nor rack the slide softly. I could do it the same way several times, and it'd just drop the round occasionally. It would feed normally maybe 75-80% of the time. Other than knowing I need to disassemble the gun and clean it anyway, is there anything I should pay special attention to as far as a damaged part or other problem? I have a 1200 disassembly guide. Is a 1300 essentially the same? Any help is appreciated

I'd suggest reading this entire thread (linked below)....I learned quite a bit from it.

Seems like grimy magazine tube, week magazine spring and tube extension mis-allignment are the usual suspects.

My older 1300 disassembles just like a 1200, with a retaining screw attaching the slide arm bridge to the breach bolt assy. This prevents you from sliding the bolt out the front (after removing the barrel) because the retaining screw gets hung up. So you either have to remove the retaining screw before sliding it out the front (not mentioned in the current 1300 manual) or drop the bolt assy. out the bottom. On the newer 1300's, the slide arm bridge has an extended hook that loops around the firing pin, securing it to the bolt assy. Thus there is no retaining screw to hang up and the bolt assy. slides right out the front.

I took it apart and cleaned it, and didn't see anything out of whack. Anything specific I can check? It doesn't seem to do it as bad, but it will, rather regularly either a) not eject a shell or b) drop one out of the bottom. I definitely am not short-stroking or racking the slide too lightly. Maybe it's just time for that 870 I probably need anyway. Any help with this one is appreciated.

I don't know about dropping the shell out the bottom but failure to chamber sounds like you need a new magazine spring - does the shell stay in the mag. tube?

Clean the tube and buy a new mag. spring (around $6) and see if that fixes it.

Clean the receiver inside well also.

I don't have another 1300 to compare it to, but the mag spring did feel a little weak. I'll go ahead and replace that, and go from there.
