While browsing various reloading webstores I've found that there are quite a few who sell "pulled" bullets in a variety of configurations (FMJ, HP, Rifle, Pistol, etc.) and weights. Where do these bullets come from? Are they recalls? Factory rejects? Surely there's not that much bad ammo out there.

Thanks.

Yes, pulled bullets are from ammo that does not meet certain criteria. They are pulled and sold for components. Depending on the method used to pull the bullets, they may be marked op a bit. Blemished bullets are another good buy to look out for. With both, dont expect perfection.

I bought about 2k pulled .38 caliber bullets from RMR. Yep, they had marks on them. Nope, the marks didn't seem to affect accuracy. I have shot great groups with them. They grouped as well as my favorite first run bullets of the same caliber and weight.

The only "pulled" ones I've used were military .308 147gr FMJ. (M80?) They all had sealant that I cleaned off with finger nail polish remover. All shot well, but not as accurately as bulk Hornady 150gr.

There are lots of sources for pulled bullets, Longdayjake (RMR Bullets) may be along to explain more... My experience with them has all been positive! The cheaper the better as far as I'm concerned!

I've used some pulled bullets from RMR with great results.

I needed some heavy .308 caliber bullets for subsonic loads in a .300blk. RMR had 190gn Sierra Match Kings that were on sale so I tried them out.

I am getting under and inch accuracy at 100 yards at 1050fps using an 8.2 inch barrel.

Loving this combo and RMR!

I got a bag of Hornady 55gr V-max from a friend. I found them to be pulled bullets so i didn't expect much from them. I went through the bag (500) to sort out the worst ones. These were used for close range double tap/multiple target practice. Something I need much more practice time to even come close to looking ...good.

Then, to my surprise, I loaded some, (these had very slight collet damage), and shot my best groups with my AR. Three shot groups under 1" @ 100 yds with peeps. So, don't ignore the good deals on pulled bullets. They are worth shooting. Well, at least the few I had were good.

I have pulled M2 bullets for my Garand. They are great for plinking.

One thing about pulled bullets is you may need to run then through a sizing die. The batch of M2s I got were nearly all out of round. After polishing and sizing I'm very happy with the purchase.

Like mentioned there are quite a few sources for pull downs. I have been shooting them for years with only minor issues along the way. Nothing other than finding a few that weren't quite up to snuff, maybe a dented HP cavity or similar thing but surely nothing that wouldn't shoot.

I do like others mentioned and run through them giving them a once over, then load and shoot as usual. It's great to be able to pick up bulk bullets in the same weight as the premium bullets and use these for practice and save the high dollar ones for hunting or other more critical uses.

FWIW the FMJ milsurp pull downs are usually NOT really super accurate when loaded to begin with. So expecting milsurp pulls to be more accurate is not prudent. They do make good practice or blasting ammo for the less than precise duty. I have purchased a butt load of various pulled bullets over the years and have been extremely happy with the results for the price paid. Even the out of round ones were good for close range blasting without modifications. Just do not expect match accuracy from them.;) The pulled premium bullets have always been just as good as new unless really mangled when pulled. YMMV
