I just picked up a Stag M5 16 inch 6.8 SPC. 1 in 10 twist with the SPCII chamber.

It is a flat top with the collapsable stock... However I have never been all that nuts about collapsable stocks for true accuracy shooting. Obtaining a cheek weld is darn near impossible..

So I am thinking about installing a standard A2 buttstock. Which fits me nicely.

I just bought the buttstock, little end cap and long buffer and spring combo from a guy who was changing his out to a magpul...
Now all I need is a standard A2 style buffer tube.

So two questions:

1. Where can I find a regular mil spec buffer tube without all the other parts?

2. Has anyone had experience with the long buffer / tube assembly working with a 16 inch barreled 6.8 carbine length gas system? It seems to work ok on 5.56mm ARs, but I am wondering about the 6.8 SPC pressure spikes and how this may work...

MidwayUSA sells all of the bits you need individually. The gas system will be fine; I have a mix of carbine buffers and rifle buffers on multiple 6.8SPCs and 5.56s and 7.62x39, and they all work just fine.

FWIW, the pressure of a carbine length gas system in 6.8SPC will be lower than that of a 223 (since you're burning the same amount of powder but confining the gasses to a smaller bore). You'll be fine.
