Picked this up a few years ago. Was told it was a Python, obviously I don't know my Colts very well, but you guys do. Help me ID it, please.

Aftermarket grips put on by me. I have the originals in the garage.

What is throwing me off is the polished trigger. I don't believe the original Pythons had that feature.

Thanks.

It should say python on the barrel. Might be the king cobra.

Thats a terrible place to store old Colt grips, regardless of what they came off of!!

Did you notice if it had a V-mainspring while you had the grips off?
If it did, it is a Python.

If it has a coil mainspring, it is a King Cobra.

But yes, it also says on the left side of the barrel what it is.

I would agree, except I'm in Southern California. It's always nice.

Didn't notice the mainspring, but I'll keep it in mind next time I have the grip off, which might be sooner than later, as you've got me curious now.

You are right in thinking the triggers were usually blued, but there is a possibility that either at Colt, or more likely later someone did some action tuning and polished it.

Definitely a Python barrel (not a KC barrel). Looks like the real McCoy to me.

PLEASE tell me you shoot it! I know they're a collectable, but a big ol' .357 is meant to run free!

Many will disagree with me, and they may be correct in doing so...I just know that I get more joy out of shooting guns than I do looking at guns.

I don't recall the KC having that hammer, either. It doesn't look anything like a KC.
Someone may have had the trigger polished. Not everyone likes a target trigger on a revolver.

As an added feature, your Python has been fitted with the Colt optional Ellison Target rear sight and Patridge Target front sight.

This may have been done at Colt as a custom order, or it may have been done by a previous owner.
The polished trigger is not standard, and I don't recall ever seeing that on a factory custom gun.

There was a blued Python for sale on a local forum some time back; the trigger was white in the photo. The seller said he knew the original owner and that the gun had come that way. It is the only blued Python I had ever seen with a trigger that was other than blued. Until now.

I don't know what I would do without you guys. Thank you.

I do shoot her, usually a few times a year on special occasions.

Beautiful Python you have there! I especially like the grips that are currently on it. And take good care of the originals as they're quite valuable as well.

My 1986 Python also came with a Patridge front sight. Seems like a factory sight, perhaps original.

Colt offered the Patridge Target front sight and Ellison Target rear sight as an option.

They were always factory fitted as a set because the higher Patridge front would require the standard Colt Accro rear sight to have to be cranked up too high to get on target.
The Ellison Target rear sight had more elevation adjustment.
