I just unpacked my new Rem R15 VTR varmit rifle. I plan to install a Leupold 6-18X40 adjustable objective scope. The dealer did not have mounts in stock and told me I would need high mounts for proper alignment.

I prefer quick detach mounts.

Any suggestions for what will best serve my needs will be appreciated

I had a VTR for about a week...... But anyway weaver made mounts for it, and they were not high mounts and they are standard style so quick detach rings would work i assume

LaRue sets the standard for mounts on the AR platform.

Having tried a number of different mounting options on my ARs, I'd have to agree with that 100%. Here's the QD LT-104 from LaRue Tactical on a POF upper. If you're thinking about installing BUIS then LaRue is the way to go. If you're not, it may still be the way to go.

To address your original post, you do generally need high rings when mounting a scope on an AR since the center of the rings need to be about 1.5" from the top of the receiver. The AR15 stock has little or no "drop at comb" i.e. the top line (comb) of the stock is in line with the top of the receiver which puts your head (and therefore eyes) higher than they would be with a "normal" rifle.

:)

Many shooters, including myself, used to use ARMS rings but abandoned them as soon as the LaRue were available because the "pad" on the ARMS mounts would eventually compress and the mounts would not stay tight on the rail.

highcap, what type of gun do you have again... A Remington VTR or a AR.....This could help us in your choice
