Background:

I have an opportunity to pick up a Pedersoli 1874 Sharps for a fair price. I compared the rifle to the current lineup on the Pedersoli site and was not able to determine the exact model so I contacted them.

Turns out that this rifle was exported in 1993 but they were not able to determine the exact model based on the serial number or CAT number from the rifle. They said it could be 1 of 2 models - Sporting model with english stock or silhouette model with pistol stock. What is an english or pistol stock?

The rifle is in outstanding condition. Chambered in 45-70, has a checkered handguard and stock, ladder style site on barrel and a tang rear and globe front. Overall it looks like it was never fired especially considering it is a 15 year old rifle.

Question:

What is the concensus on the quality of Pedersoli rifles especially their sharps rifles from the 1990's? Is their quality less than those currently being produced? Do I need to be concerned with anything such as inferior steels, shoddy fit, parts which are prone to break...etc?

Is a price of < $900 a fair price?

Thank you for your advice.

Mine is of that vintage, and it is a nice rifle. Final finish is not as good as a Shilo but fair for the price. Accuracy is excellent and is a good rifle to start in the BPCR world.

English stock is straight.
Pistol grip stock looks similar to what you would see on a standard Winchester or Remington bolt action rifle.

Davide Pedersoli firearms are of uniformly excellent quality be they early or late manufacture.
Their firearms have been used for over two decades to regularly win European blackpowder and specialty shooting matches and they win on this side of the lake fairly regular too though American custom gun makers continue to outperform any and all factory offerings.

I own Pedersoli made Sharps and Trapdoor Springfield breechloaders along with a muzzleloading Gibbs type target rifle.
The one and only complaint I have is the rear sight could be better quality on the Sharps rifle but this was easily corrected.

$900 is a very good price for a Pedersoli Sharps in excellent condition in my opinion.
