So, I call upon the great philosophers of policy and RTKBA for a job choice query. I have two jobs, now. One is a maintenance job that I've been with for a few years, the other is being a guitar tech at a local shop.

The guitar tech job has potential to pay more, and be more rewarding overall. But, no firearms. He was a posted location until customers told him they'd never shop at a place with the stickers. So down they came, but his mind isn't changed. He doesn't want to freak out customers. I get that, kind of.

The other job is out in the heat all summer, doing maintenance from HVAC to pulling toilets, unclogging nasty drains, but they don't care if I carry. Also, there's a tool allowance there, and they've been pretty good about working around my school schedule. I also have access to a pool which I also take care of all summer.

So, my question is, which one to choose. I can elaborate on any points, I just want help hashing this out.

I'd take the guitar job.

Sounds like a better, more comfortable gig. Pretty unlikely somebodies going to come in shooting up a guitar store. And while I am NOT suggesting this, if you DID happen to carry a deep concealed piece and were diligent about keeping it hid, nobody would be the wiser. Just saying!!

Sounds like just the maintenance job is flexible around your school schedule? I'd imagine school is your priority, and the job you're working in the meantime is secondary to completing your degree. I'm currently in school and working, and that's how I made the decision of which job to choose.

I'd take the maintenance job, even if it pays a bit less. It does have other benefits, as you mentioned (pool access, you can carry, and flexibility for school).

A lot here will disagree but just forget the gun thing when it comes to work most business are going to have a no gun policy and if you want to work in certain industries you just have to accept itor carry at risk (not advisable). Since you're in school sounds like neither will be your actual career so just take the one that makes you happy, or the one that will look the best on a resume when you do start applying for the jobs you'd like to make a career of.

4b,

Education is the key to future success. If you can get the guitar job to work around your schooling then I'd pick that. If they interfere with your schooling then do the maintenance job till you're done with school. Stay in school.

best wishes- oldandslow

You have to go with your gut. I would modify the choices as either go to the guitar shop and carry anyway secretly, or stick with where you are, along with the benefits you are receiving. But that's just me.

Guitar shop. Any yayhoo can jerk a toilet, but it takes skill and finesse to work on an instrument. That demonstrates a willingness to learn, and a lot of patience, along with mechanical ability. Top that off with better pay and a more comfortable working environment...if the pool is s big deal you can get a membership to a public pool, or make friends with the next pool owner that stumbles across your psth. As for carrying, I wouldnt. Been there, done that, actually had special permission with my last job to unholster and stow a weapon in a locked drawer. It's not a big deal, and what's in the car won't bother anybody.

And yes, I was in a hostile place for a while. Factory job that was getting really ugly and they continually asked me to be muscle in the office when they fired people. Numerous threats and several of them were serious. I kept a winchester 1300 riot gun in the truck loaded with 00 buck. HR knew what was there though in case they ever needed it. People still wonder why I left that plsce...

My first response is to stay with your present job. Not because they don't care if you carry but because it makes it easier for you to stay in school. Now the guitar job has the potential to pay more and be more rewarding. Most students could use more money.

Several have suggested you take the guitar job and carry discreetly. I can't give the same advice. The problem is if your gun gets discovered and you get fired. When you apply for jobs in the future you will have to give the reason you were fired. Rarely do views on 2A come up in a job interview. Regardless of your prospective employer's 2A views getting fired because you were carrying a gun when you weren't supposed to is not going to work for you. It would make one think if you can't follow a big rule (no CCW on the job) would you follow the little rules? That can close doors for you.

Don't get me wrong. Firearms ownership and having one to defend yourself are very important things. What I'm saying is don't make it the main thing that governs your life decisions. I don't know what career you are trying to pursue but most jobs will require you to disarm yourself at some time.

I would go with the job that is most flexible with your school schedule. That's the important thing right now as either of these two jobs are just temporary employment til you achieve your degree.

This. Welcome to the real world.

I will add that if the location of the job is creating a high risk for armed robberies and other violent crimes then don't take the job.

The guitar job sounds safer as artists tend to be more liberal.

There may be good reason for the maintenance job allowing conceal carry. It may (probably) require you to work in undesirable neighborhoods.

The Wise Old Crew here makes some valid points, like the guitar job would be better on a Resume // anyone can fix sinks. Also which job experiences could be used to make side $$ once into your career, it's just more obvious that more ppl needs house style repairs vs. guitars. HVAC is many a tech's full career. Or perhaps once wife & 2 planned kids plus ''how did that happen?" (LoL) show up, you want to add onto the house. You could potentially do a lot of the work yourself, and save $$....if you knew how!
However, I could understand if your career path is leading you into an office setting, why not get into the A/C a.s.a.p.? Will the guitar shop be somewhat flexible for your school purposes, did you ask? Is it in a ''good'' location?
And above all, keep a spotless job record, always be there on time +5, and do what the boss wants (fulfill job description). HINT: those are the top 2 problems in Jobs-America.

Hopefully you can be more picky on your CCW options at that stage in your work life. Good luck!
