Why? Why have one? I can't think of anything short of nuclear war to get me to leave my house. I am familiar with the area....I can stockpile a ton of stuff, literally....and I think I can defend it better than somewhere I am unfamiliar. So my question is...what could be so bad as to cause you to "bug out" and where exactly would you go?

Exactly my point in the thread I started about staying or going.
For me, if my house became uninhabitable, or if I knew that riotous mobs were stringing people up. Otherwise, I'm staying put.

The LDS church recommends members keep a "72-hour kit". Why? I have nearly used mine twice. Once, we lived by a river than nearly flooded. The other time, we were getting out of the way of Hurricane Andrew.

You'd love to stay, but you may have to go. Better to have it and not need it...

I'm probably not leaving in any realistically foreseeable circumstances. More important is my "truck bag". I spend a lot of time on the road and considering the current weather, if I go over the hill someplace, I'll stay put and "make smoke".

Stay safe.
Bob

I don't think of a BOB so much as just for bugging out as I do just good emergency preparedness. It doesn't cost much to make one and it is nice to know that you have it if you need it...speaking of which my water is a year old I think I will re-fill the bottles.

Here, I keep it for earthquakes. In that scenario, I may no longer have a home to defend, so I'd have to be mobile.

stv-I can see it there or in tornado/hurricane country--or anyplace "just because". Here, snow/ice storms are biggest threat, possibility of haz-mat incident on Turnpike (upwind). Nothing likely to seriously damage the house-brick ranch w/ basement chiseled out of rock.

BTW_what do y'all like for back packs, says w/ 35lbs, reasonable price?

Stay safe.

Fire
Hazardous material spill caused by train wreck a mile from home or truck from the freeway less than a mile from home
Earthquake (the sky is falling)
etc.

A few years ago, we had a whole town here in Wisconsin evacuated with only minutes notice due to a train derailment / chemical problem. One of the threats we keep hearing about is a dirty bomb incident. Many people live near nuke plants. Earth quakes and the resulting fires can wipe out whole neighborhoods.

My plans are to shelter in place, but flexability in planing is a must. If you put a BOB together and never need it, so what? If you need one and don't have it ready, you're screwed.

A mans home is his castle, only if you can keep it. Loose the house and then what? Burning a building down is pretty easy, especially if there are no Firefighters around (I know, I'm one). Stay put if you can but one must always have options...

Hrms. Things that could make you leave your home in a hasty and unorganized manner.

1. Goons in black with warrents
2. Earthquakes
3. Rioters
4. Lynch mobs
5. Tornados
6. Forest/brush fires
7. Disease outbreak
8. Being caught in the firebreak area just outside of a military operated quartine (Think about it. If a major outbreak happened, military will move in and try to isolate it. But they'll setup at least a 30 mile dead zone to prevent escapees from the QZ).
9. Chemical spill
10. Radiological event
11. 'Free' concerts setup by hippies.
12. Zombies
13. Vampire infestation
14. Neighbor turns out to be a child molester

Anyone care to add?

A prepared person would have a home on their back. An unprepared person is just a scared refugee scavenging whatever they can find.

The whole thing about Bug out Bags, or guns for HD in general all hinges on your thinking that something MIGHT happen. The odds are not great, frankly you are more likely to win the lotto than wind up in a gun fight. But if you believe in insurance, then a BOB is not a bad idea. Cheap enough as insurance goes. Like so many other things we use as a hedge against things 'going south', its probably better to have if needed, than just wish you had done something.
