I`ve just purchased another Mossberg. I got the Mossberg 535. It came with two barrels. A 28 inch barrel and a 24 inch rifled slug barrel with sights.

I`ve hunted with slugs before but it`s been quite a few years ago. I bought a few boxes of 2 3/4" Hornady BT slugs and WOOWWW. Just awsome.

I`ve been reading a bit on other slugs and I am curious. Is there any better slug to use than the 300 grain 2 3/4" Hornady??

My Mossy is chambered for 2 3/4, 3, or 3 1/2 inch shells so should I try the 3 1/2" slugs?? I ask this because I`ve not been able to find any locally and I`m wondering if there`s any need?

Also, since the barrel is rifled, would I be able to use sabots and rifled slugs??

Best slug for what? Lions? Tigers? Bears? Southern deer? Yankee deer? Humans? Prairie dogs?

The "rifled" slugs are mainly for use in smoothbore barrels. They won't damage a rifled barrel or anything, but they might lead it, and accuracy may not be great. Rifled barrels are mainly intended for sabot slugs, and any other slugs that say they're for use in a rifled barrel only.

Specifically what type of game? "Game" can refer to everything from squirrels and birds to bull moose, and what is appropriate for one is not appropriate for the other.

MOA, that's a mighty big can of worms you just opened.

There''s no ineffective 12 ga slugs on anything in North America. Some slugs are more effective on large game like moose or brown bear than others.

For anything this side of Mastodon, the Rottweil 1 3/8 oz Brenekke may be best, but it works best in smoothbores.

For things smaller than a Mini Cooper, just about any full bore slug or sabot will do the job. Do some bench testing and find the one that works best in your barrel.

I'm no expert on slugs, but it is my understanding that fully rifled barrels are specifically designed with sabot slugs in mind.

You might want to scrap this poll. You left out many popular choices, and included rifled slugs which aren't even a consideration in that rifled barrel you have. I shoot lightfields. They tend to kill deer just fine.
