After 2000 rounds in 22 caliber benchrest rifles shooting the same charge weights as the .223, they also have opened up their average group size about 30% By the time they open up about 50% and their average groups size is now about 3/10ths MOA at 100 yards, the barrel's set back or replaced. A 3000 round barrel life for 22 caliber match cartridges producing best results is about normal; some won't make it that long if hot loads are used.
Same barrel life for the .308 Win in match rifles. Sierra Bullets changes their match grade barrels testing 30 caliber bullets in .308 Win cases after about 3000 rounds, too.
Regarding throat erosion, I've measured the throat erosion on four 7.62 NATO Garand barrels. They gauge went in about 1/10th inch past zero for every thousand rounds of barrel life. When the gauge read 3, top ranked team members got a new barrel. if it went in past that but not over 5, the rifle was relegated to use by new shooters starting out as a competitive shooter. Any barrel that gauged 5 or more was replaced. New barrels airgauged .3078" groove diameter or smaller were used for match grade Garands.
