Am I the only one who was unawre that Ohio's concealed carry license has to be renewed every four years? Plus, in order to renew, you have to pay and take the class AGAIN! I certainly don't have a problem with any renewal process, but what's up with taking the 12 hour course all over? How about just re-qualifing in the two hour shooting portion only. I also wasn't aware of the nunber of restrictions for carry and the prohibited locations. Maybe I should have put the $150.00 towards a new varmint hunting rifle. Oh well, typical OHIO. :banghead:

From Packing.org

Ohio's license to carry a concealed handgun is effective for four years from the date it is issued. The training requirement must be met every six years, or every other time you renew your license.

Speaking of Packing.org... I could have sworn that Ohio had reciprocity with Texas... But thier state map doesn't show that now. Did something happen, is the site messed up, or was it never that way?

hopefully, they'll change the laws radically over the next 4 years anyways

I wonder why your instructors in your training course never bothered to tell you about the license expiration. I also wonder what ELSE they forgot to tell you... ;)

If you read the actual law, you will see that you must present a "competency certification" which would be your certificate of course completion. This certification is good for SIX years so in four, when your permit expires, you can re-use your original and you will not have to re-take the course until eight years have passed at the earliest. Also, you are not required to re-take any course within those SIX years.

You're good on retraining until at least 2012. All you'll have to do is get a new photo, resubmit fingerprints, resubmit your original cert, resubmit to another background check and pay a renewal fee (unless the fee is waived, as is written into the law).

As always, don;t take my word for it, have a lawyer read the law and advise you.

Cyanide: nope, we never had reciprocity with TX. Probably because it's harder to get a CHL in Ohio.

I must be looking at florida's ccw too much. Is there any problem with having multiple ccws? I want the flexibilty of a florida one, but I also want to support ohio's ccw (and ohio ccw stats).

I wonder where I will end up later in life. I want to live in a fee state (ohio is decent, but cincinnati isn't great) where I will have no problem getting NFA stuff (maybe machine guns, but definately suppressors). I think I heard somewhere that it's difficult to get nfa stuff in Hamilton county. Who knows.. will have to see later.

HaHa

My Kentucky permit is good for 5 or 6 years and i just have to pay a check by mail to get it renewed and it is good in at least; Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky (of course), Tennessee, Georgia, Florida and Penn.

my understanding about Hamilton Co is that aside from the NFA stuff they also a mag limit for rifles. My 3 gun match director keeps grumbling something about Cincinnati Simplified Rules when I ask why we don't load AR's up with 20 ~40 rounds for matches.

I don't really know about the mag limits on the guns... but I don't think they are enforced (unless you did something real bad and they tac that onto the list of charges).

I really don't like cincinnati, and ohio isn't much better (at least this part). Too liberal for my taste... well... maybe not 'liberal', more like they should just stay out of people's lives. I at the very minimum need to get out of this county... but I think I want to get out of this state. No which state do I want to consider? Any ideas? (this is theoretical... I'm a poor college student at the moment)

357 -- I think what you mean is that Hamilton County is too "authoritarian." You can't get much more conservative than here, but you can definitely get more libertarian. If you want the worst of both, move north in this state.

Unenforced laws regarding mag capacity and registration (in theory) of those dreaded "semi-automaic handguns are only if you reside in the City of Cincinnati, not Hamilton Cty.

Don't go too far north, because the ooopsite corner of the state is the liberal area you dont want. I'd suggest somewehere mid-state, but outside of Columbus.

30 round limit on magazines is correct. According to the ORC, any ammunition feeding device with a capacity of over 30 rounds is considered a machine gun or dangerous ordnance or some nonsense like that. I ran into this when looking to purchase a Beta-C mag for my AR. Can't find them for sale n OH and nobody out of state will ship them here.

I like Ohio well enough to move back here from TN, but we're definitely a middle-of-the-road state. Liberal enough that we get all the crummy welfare laws and anti-gun garbage, and conservative enough that we have the Good-ole-Boys' networks in a number of Sheriff's offices. Luckily, mine's not one of them, but If I drive just north, I'll hit Cleveland and they're fairly insane.

c-357 Just move across the river and enjoy the air of freedom We got a 100 times more freedom with firearms than the commie state your in. Can't see why anyone would want to live in Cin. and suffer when freedom is just min. away over the river.

Don't think so. I have three, which covers me for about 33 states in all -- unfortunately, many of them states on the far end of the country, and even more unfortunately not some of the states nearby where I go most often. I'm considering a couple more when I can afford to get them. I've seen threads written by people who have half a dozzen or more permits and never saw any indication of a problem.

Actually I have put thought into moving into kentucky. I've also thought about indiana. I just want to go somewhere where the people are nice, and the state stays out of your business... non-authoritarian and not likely to turn into a people's republic.

Another plus about either of those states is I should be able to get some land where I can do what I want (with in reason), and I have space between me and the neighbors. It would appear, the further south you go, the friendlier the state becomes (freedom wise). But I must have the 'option' to get what ever NFA item I want, without being hassled.

I am in adams county ohio and if you are using in state status to lower your college cost it may or may not be an option. Have no clue on time frame for what you are talking.

Out here we have no e-check on cars. I can shoot on my land, I can hunt on my land, I only need a permit for a septic sytem due to the river aquifer system. The electric company only wants to hook up to your meter and see that that is wired properly. They could care less if you don't know how to wire stuff, they just want the meter right so the bill is right. Same with water, if you get city water out here they give you a tap at the road and you hook it up.

I grew up in ohio and thought I would be happy here. It is better than hamilton county where I grew up.

But I will be leaving next year after I sell my place. I am going to land in kentucky or tenn most likely but all adjoining states have potential depending on how much land I can buy for X amount of money.

As for the ccw, I am planning to go ahead and do the training if I can find out from some of my potential states if that training will be good enough for their permit. I may do the training anyway, or I may not.

Good luck in whatever you choose.

I'm only 20 at the moment, and in college. So I have quite a while before I do anything. I don't have to worry about tuition at the moment, I have been extreamly blessed with my financial aid.

I might not get out of the state, but I am definately getting out of Hamilton county. I'll have to see how things go with employment - I will be in IT/CS field. But I want to live in a rural/semi-rural area if possible - even if I have to commute to city every day.

I'll see where life takes me.
