Hey guys, I've tried using the search function but my google foo isn't very strong these days. I've always thought cowboy action shooting looked fun, but I always considered it as too expensive for my blood.

Lately though, I've been wondering, is there a branch or subclass of it that allows the use of only 1 handgun? I Know that Wild Bunch is out there, and let's you use a 1911, but im more interested in something where I can shoot a single action revolver :D

On that same note, how strictly enforced is "John Wayne can do no wrong?" Is it just a fun slogan, or if I find it in John Wayne movie, does it become legal in the game? (Just something I've always wondered)

There us not an official category for shooting one handgun in SASS but some clubs make exceptions for new shooters from time to time. Check with local clubs to see their policy.

Have fun,
Lafitte

At one time there was a "working cowboy" division in SASS or NCOWS which only required one sixgun along with rifle and shotgun. I cannot now find mention of it.
I remember when the second sixgun came along in SASS to increase the reasonable round count.

But folks are real helpful and if you take an interest you will be offered a choice of loaners until you save up for that second revolver. Lots of these people talk in terms of "I got a new SET of guns last week." so they have plenty of extras laying around.

I bet they would draw the line if you showed up with the full auto UZI he used in McQ:D (I think it was an UZI)

Bristol Mtn.Man got it right. In "McQ" the Duke, in his non-LEO capacity, used both an Ingram MAC 10 and a Browning Hi-Power. Doubt very much if either of these two guns would ever be good to go at a SASS match.

Jim told you right: Show up with what you have, and I bet that other shooters will fill in the gaps.

Officially, a shooter with one revolver could either reload it "on the clock" or shoot five rounds and take the penalties for the unfired rounds. In five years of cowboy shooting I have NEVER seen that happen.

If you like the game, you can brown bag your lunch for a while and save up for a second sixgun.

"The Duke can do no wrong" is not in the rules. I've noticed him in movies waving a cocked rifle around, sweeping his companions. A definite no-no.

Cowboy Action Shooting is designed for four guns; two single action revolvers, a pistol caliber carbine or rifle and a shotgun. The only pump action shotgun that is legal is the Winchester 97 and clones.

You do not need to shoot identical revolvers. You can shoot a cartridge revolver and a blackpowder cap and ball revolver such as the 1851 Navy. However there are different shooter categories that require specific calibers and types of handguns.

The best advise is to go visit a club when they are having a SASS Match. SASS Members are a friendly bunch and always looking to get other folks involved in CAS. Ask questions. Bring your ear plugs or ear muffs as you will be invited to shoot their guns.

Yeah, besides the cost, having all those guns to clean is definitely a show stopper for me, too.
Real cow pokes had maybe two guns, a revolver and a rifle.
Nothing wrong with reloading on the clock, instead of needing a cart to haul around all those shootin' irons.
Worse than golf - no caddies.

Like said above, the Cowboy Action crown are a very friendly bunch. If you show up and ask questions you probably will shoot that day.

As for guns, I have found it's no more expensive than any other shooting sport even though you need 4 guns. You are not forced to buy new, you can always buy used to get started. I bought a used Marlin in .357 Magnum for $300. I had a Vaquero and bought another used for $275. I also bought a used shotgun for just under $200 and I had what I needed to shoot...

I'm afraid those prices are a little out of date. A New Model Vaquero (used) will cost you $500 +. A nice used real Winchester 97 will run around $500+. Marlins chambered in 38/357 these days will cost upwards of $800.00. Then you need to buy clothes, boots, hats, and the leather. A decent rig will run from about $250.00 up and then you need a shotgun belt for about $80.00.
Now lets talk reloading...........................................

And I'll also add good luck finding a marlin in .357. I have found a couple and the price was WAY out there. I've been wanting one but not at the price their getting now.

This thread did give me an excuse to watch McQ again. It was a Mac10, my memory isn't what it used to be:eek:

Red cent, at least I have that covered: I've got a flannel shirt in the closet, and already wear cowboy boots ;)

I've even got a realoading press back home in Seattle.

I think SASS might be something that I'll just have to wait a while to get into.

Red Cent, if you know of a place where I can get true blue 20 oz denim I have the patterns for Red River shirts and a sewing machine.
