Picked up my first J frame today, and my third S&W. Model 642 to be exact.

However, I have a question. When I dry fire the gun I see a spark in between the frame and cylinder where the firing pin is. Is this normal?

Congrats on the buy! I actually just bought my first revolver, a 442 today. I bought some snap caps for it too and ive been dry firing it like crazy, but i havent seen any sparks coming from it. IMO that doesnt sound normal :/ but like i said, my first revolver so im far from an expert lol

Yes there is a spark Texan i thought i was crazy when i first saw that.. I tried to get info on the web but i couldnt find anything on it. I hope this thead will get an answer for us

I actually witnessed a spark dry firing mine too! It only happened once and I haven't been able to recreate it yet. Just dry firing with snap caps.

I think you should give S&W a call and see that not only did you purchase a fine firearm but its supported by some of the best customer service in the business.

Could it be just a static electricity spark? Winter/late fall tends to be dry and prone to those sparks. We even set our fire detector off sometimes by touching the wall it's mounted on.

Maybe unlikely, but if the grip is rubber and there's no hammer for your thumb to transfer a static charge to, it might be a possibility.

I guess I'd look for excessive wear on the pin or what it's hitting, but if other guns are doing it then it sounds like it's normal.

My S&W 442 sparked right out of the box. I have fired the gun with snap-caps in excess of 2,000 times now and it will spark every few pulls.

Don't sweat it, it seems to be the norm with these little guns. Just work on that trigger pull and enjoy your new carry gun.
