I recently purchased a Springfield lightweight loaded Bi-Tone (my first 1911). It has worked flawlessly but... the black finish on the alloy frame started coming off with the first cleaning. My options appear to be:
1. Live with it
2. Remove all of the black, leaving bare alloy (not sure what to use to remove the finish)
3. Have it refinished (I don't want to spend a fortune)
Any thoughts and suggestions would be appreciated.

If you just bought it new, I would contact Springfield. Their customer service is very good.

If you bought it second hand, I would contact Springfield and see what price they offer for a frame only refinish. There are a number of shops out there that do good work refinishing pistols though my only experience with polymers is Tripp Research so I'm biased.

Getting a frame only refinished is not terribly expensive. The down side is that as it has the serial #, you have to ship as if it were a firearm and not parts. If you can get a FFL in your area to ship, it can go USPS. If not, it has to go by FedEx or UPS which means overnight. You could wind up spending as much on shipping both ways as the actual refinish work.
