Specifically, doing so using Tapco's stock system. According to their website, the stock and grip would count as two U.S. made parts and if you opt for the hand guard, three.

If one were to then do the work required for the bullet guide that would be get you up to four U.S. made parts (or five if the screw itself counts).

At this point would the weapon be 922r compliant? If not, I am confused as to how Tapco could sell a Saiga stock that does not require the full "sporter to AK" conversion without some sort of warning to the consumer that the rifle would need more work to be in compliance.

I don't think adding a bullet guide counts. ETA,found this on the site listed below. "Bullet guides are not counted 922(r) parts and can't be used for compliance purposes!!! "

Thanks Jimmy! That answered my question perfectly.

I never thought about the magazine being counted (especially as three parts).

So to anyone else curious about this, assuming you A) do the magazine conversion, B) use the Tapco grip/stock, and C) stick with U.S. made AK mags you are in compliance.

I used to do saiga conversions for my rifles. I would use 5-6 US parts usually being all the furniture as well as trigger group. You can also use a US piston.

furniture+trigger group
furniture+magazine
Magazine+trigger group.

All of those combinations will put Saigas within the legal parts count. Furniture and trigger group is the best imo as your not limited to us magazines

Oh and bullet guides and screws do not count

As state jimmyraythomason stated the bullet guide does not count, nor does the pistol grip as you cited.

The bullet guide is not a countable part an even if it were you need to be removing foreign parts to get you to ten or fewer countable foriegn parts, not just adding parts. Moreover, the intrafuse combo grip/stock is garbage and gives you none of the real advantages of a pistol grip conversion.
