Question regarding trade value S&W 19-3

Howdy

I would pass on that one too. The blue cylinder latch is a big red flag to me. There are lots of nice Model 19s out there. You should be able to pick one up for around $650-$700.

I bought this 19-3 brand-spanky new in 1975. Still have the box and all the goodies. I paid $125 for it back then. You should expect to pay a little bit more today.:D

The old way of fastening the barrel was after the barrel was threaded in a pin was driven through the frame and the upper portion of the barrel. You can see the pin on my Model 19-3. Later, this method was eliminated because it was cheaper to cut the threads so they were an interference fit to prevent the barrel from unscrewing. That is what is meant by crush fit. Recessed means the chambers have a counterbore for the rims. You can tell a Smith has this feature if the cylinder extends all the way back to the recoil shield. Cylinders that are not counterbored have a space behind the cylinder and the rims are visible when the revolver is viewed from the side.

It is Pinned & Recessed, but I don’t think that is a factory nickel finish or even a good job at that. If it’s a factory nickel plating there will be an “N” stamped on the frame under the grips and possibly on the rear face of the cylinder. The cylinder latch should not be blued and the rear sight should be blued. The hammer and trigger look like they were plated when the gun was plated and has since been mostly worn off. It may or may not still be a good shooter, but a VERY careful hands on inspection is necessary.

Man DJ that is beautiful.

I contacted him today and officially passed on it so he could pursue other deals.

I want a .357 revolver badly and am not in a situation to just buy one, so I'm shopping the Sig around to trade for one. I may have to get a Ruger or something along those lines, as they are more in line with the value of my 2022.

I have no problems with that though. Ruger makes fantastic stuff. I've owned several and have been pleased with them all.

My old 4" 19-4

Bought it used for $400 about 5 years ago.

An old Police trade-in, some holster wear, but timing, endshake, etc., are wonderful

I feed it mild handloads

I really bought it for my wife

this is what they mean by "Recessed"

Top-strap is not flame cut from hot 110-125gr magnums, which is great, because these old K-frames don't like 'em

Cylinder release is the easiest thing on a revolver to fall off. Second only to the cylinder/yoke retention screw after extended firing. Easy to miss if your walking in the woods and it was very loose.

Obviously been refinished, sights, hammer, and trigger are all the same finish. Strictly a shooter at this point I guess if you need a gun for your truck or tackle box it would do. But without a through checkout I wouldn't walk but RUN the opposite direction.

"When did S&W offer 19s with nickel plating?"

I don't know but I have a 19-4 that is a nickel version, very pretty piece. The revolver in the picture looks stainless to me.

Arkansas Paul

Still can't decide if this Model 19 has been badly replated (almost looks like bright chrome versus nickel plating), or it's a badly finished stainless Model 66. In any event I would definitely pass on this one.
