Hi everyone, I just got a message from a guy who was having problems with his remington 48 shotgun. I own one myself and am fond of it.

The shotgun is recoil operated. The barrel slides back into the receiver. There is a spring inside the fore-end that pushed back against the barrel. A bronze ring sits at the end of the spring. There is writing on it to show which end goes up. I was told never to shoot the gun without this ring.

The bolt has two long bars which go to a spring inside the stock. There is a cocking handle which is held in by a ball detent. You have to pull off the handle to remove the bolt from the front of the receiver.

Mike's problem is that the barrel wouldn't return after the shot when he was using low brass shells. That happened to me the first time I used mine after a long lay off. What seemed to work for me was cleaning everything including the inside grooves in the receiver and oiling the snot out of it and then taking it shooting. After a few rounds it wanted to work. A gun shop clerk said to me that they were built for high brass and didn't like lower powered rounds as much.

If anybody has anything to add, I'd love to hear it.
