Well, I was farting around on e-bay the other day and came across a Wilson case trimmer. I am still building my reloading gear up to begin to reload, but I had read here that the Wilson is a good trimmer and was looking for one to bid on.

I put a $11 bid on a well-used looking Wilson, figuring I'd be outbid.

Well, I wasn't.

The trimmer came to me as pictured, below. Note that there really isn't rust on the case holder spindle, it's just grime :scrutiny: The cutter seems very sharp. I have no idea if all the parts are actually here, since I don't know what one of these looks like new  (I do know that I need at least the shell holders for my calibers)

I have a few really lame newbie questions: :)

1) I assume the cutter is supposed to move in and out of the cylinder it sits in, as the shell is trimmed?

2) Does the set screw lock down onto the threaded spindle to lock the threaded part in place, to get consistant cuts on the case?

3) Once I get a shell holder, how does it attach, and how does a guy secure and remove the cases?

4) Should I just scrap this mess and start over from scratch? :banghead:

Wish it came with the original instructions!!

Thanks guys,

duck911,

Congrats on getting a great trimmer at a great price. Yes, all the parts are there.

1) Yep.

2) Yep.

3) They shell holder lays on the bottom so as to position the brass case, which is inserted in it, inline with the cutter and the threaded spindle. You adjust the threaded spindle so that it positions the brass case and shell holder so that when the cutter is all the way forward, you are trimming the case to the exact length you want. It's easier to do than to explain.

4) Nope. You've got one of the best trimmers on the market.

ditto...it's good, jsut takes a little getting used to. and u have to buy caliber specific caseholders

Thanks for the feedback guys.

USSR, based on your description, I think I understand the shellholders - the shell goes through the holder, but the holder just "sits" on the rails, supported from behind by the flat end of the threaded spindle?

I'm going to take some 0000 steel wool to this bad buy and clean it up, then keep it wiped down with a silcone gun cloth.

Hopefully it works well for me!

yeah, the case goes through the shellholder and the shellholder sits on the rails. the pistol caseholders are a pain...you need to tap or press the case into the caseholder and then back out

I trim all my Benchrest brass with a Wilson. All my other brass is done on my RCBS or my Forster. The Wilson is the best, the Forster next, then the RCBS, of the three I have. I sent a Hornady back.:)

My Wilson trimmer works great for my bottle necked cases, for straight walled cases use something else.
