i know its probably been asked before but i couldnt find anything on it...
on the sig p6's or p225... why is there a hole in the hammer? and dont refer me to sig forum... somehow my 4 different email addresses have been banned? (really not cool if they want new members to join)... Thanks, Brian.

Style.

Reduce hammer mass to reduce lock time.

Stress relief so the hammer is less likely to crack.

Likely some combination of all of the above.

It was originally thought that the notch was there so that if the gun is dropped on the hammer an armorer could tell and then check the pistol for internal malfunctions caused by the drop.

A (bad)translation of the owners manual however seems to indicate that the notch itself is a safety meant to deform or break after dropping, rather than the entire hammer deforming or breaking.

If any one here speaks german perhaps they can do a better translation.

Hey, now, I thought my translation was pretty good for someone who doesn't speak German. By the way, transcribing the German text from that picture of the manual into Babelfish was kind of a chore. :)

I even emailed a German police department that carried the P6 to ask about it - no response.

In my opinion, the best explanation is that the primary function of the hooked hammer is to deform if the gun is dropped hammer-first, reducing stress and potential damage to associated mechanisms. This would appear to be the general sense of what the manual says, as far as I can tell. It also would provide a visual cue to the unit armorer that the pistol needs inspection, although I haven't seen anything conclusive about whether or not this was something the designers had in mind. Finally, some people think it was also so that the pistol could be hung on clothesline to dry after being sprayed with Ballistol, but, again, I've seen no direct evidence of this.

Whew, three hours and no answer?!

Like others have said, it's supposed to be for when it's dropped hammer first on the ground. To me personally it kills the lines of the gun. Not that'd I turn one down, or even not buy one at a good price! :neener:

Sorry, no offense intended, I just wanted to explain that I didn't how correct the translation was.

I've been wondering the same thing since getting a P-6.
I came up with:

* Teutonic Talisman to ward off evil?
* Raw Material Cost Reduction? (to get the low bid and beat out H-K)
* Original design ring-hammers all cracked there during heat-treating?
* CNC Programming Error?
* Hanger Hook for very small, but highly over-engineered German gun racks?
* Opens German Beer Bottles somehow?
* Cleaning Fingernails before daily Uniform Inspection?

But, I was just guessing. :D

Glad to finally know it's probably a Shock Absorber / Damage Indicator for dropped guns!

No offense taken, jakk55, I was just kidding around. :) I was surprised that no one at sigforum.com, which I thought had some German members, came forward with an exact translation. I'd like to know definitively, too.

If it is made to break it is not so the armorer needs to inspect it, obvously it needs maintnance it has a broken hammer. My guess would be along the lines of the 80 series colt firing pin safety. It is a engenering safety. That is to say protect the manufacture if it gets droped fires and kills someone. People that didnt like the 80 series colt firing pin safety took it off. If you dont like the hole in the hammer fill it in.
